Season 8

Task #5
Pugh V. Solomon
Welcome back to Snawlterm Season 8! I hope you all enjoyed your holidays and had some good festivities. I definitely did, but I for one am also excited to get back to hosting this game. Before the break, we left off in Week 4 wherein you guys designed what has to be, for me, the strongest panel results I've ever seen for a Music Video task, ever.

This week, I have chosen to spotlight two fashion designers whose styles I love. Below are two portfolios I have compiled which illustrate who each designer is, the style(s) they have built their carrers upon, and some photos summarizing their body of work.

Your job for this task is to choose one of these tremendously talented designers, and design a Habbo outfit inspired from their work. You need to imbue your outfit with their style while at the same time making the outfit from your own interpretation. Please do not simply duplicate an outfit from a Google image because I will find out. Your final product at panel should be an outfit made entirely by you, but in the vain of the chosen designer (almost as if you were commissioned to design for them, so to speak). Below are the portfolios of each designer. Click on the respective button to open the portfolio in a new browser window.

Panel
Welcome back from the holiday break. I hope all of you are refreshed and ready to go!

For the third week in a row, the quality of outfits in this panel is amazing. This makes my job hard because I have to actively look for excuses to be critical of one's outfit. With this task, there were multiple approaches to each optional designer, and I believe the avenues travelled have resulted in a really unique panel packed to the brim with talent. I can't wait for everyone to see what the nine of you came up with.

My scheduled guest judge had to bow out for personal reasons, so I will once again be judging alone this week. Starting next week however, I should be accompanied by a guest judge at panel until the final four.
It's time to get Season 8 back on the road!
Let's see which designers chose their inspirations wisely, and who - well. . . chose unwisely. Sorry I got nothing.
Group #1 - Gareth Pugh

fupaqueen (Elise)
Snawl: This outfit doesn't necessarily evoke G. Pugh as much as I hoped it would. The colour palette is all there, and I definitely get how compact linear graphics could tie into his style, but overall this outfit is a bit on the safe side for me - which is something you can never say about Pugh. The headpiece is lovely, and I like how the panties make the circle backpiece look like your Habbo is wedged in the middle of a giant black cut-out heart. The white diagonal dash across the body is neat. The biggest issue for me is the jacket, it looks far too familiar and pedestrian to be part of a Gareth Pugh tribute. His clothing really isn't supposed to evoke familiarity. This comes off as an "Elise outfit with Gareth Pugh in the same room who may or may not have given her a pointer or two" far more than an outfit designed in the vain of G. Pugh. This outfit appears to be designed by someone who is too scared for their safety in this competition to take risks, which makes no sense because you've been the most consistent and ferocious thus far. I hope you can bounce back.

LC22 (Elysse)
Snawl: Breathtaking. Gareth Pugh is not shy of using his models' nude bodies in his presentations (the background image for his portfolio page has a topless model if you look closely enough) and I can see this outfit on his runway with no stretch of the imagination. I've seen many designers try to make that foxtail work, and this has gotta be the best use of it, ever. It flows so well with the wedding dress and the yeti shoes. I love how you coloured the hair to make it look like part of the fabric from the sash accessory. The uncoordinated lighter grays around the chest and stomach are really beautiful and fill just the right amount of space. Looking at this outfit is overwhelming; my eyes are being enticed by every angle and I don't know where to look next. The only minor issue regarding this outfit is the stethoscope, it's a bit odd, but you paired it with the lower accessories to where it blends in and looks less like a piece of medical equipment. This is a fantastic outfit that beautifully encapsulates not only Pugh's iconic style, but your ingenuity as a designer. Incredible job!

Pine (Nate)
Snawl: I love this, it looks almost like a parody of abstract brutalist artwork and sculpting, but a parody that does the subject matter justice. You're causing dialogue with an outfit, which is quintessential Gareth Pugh. If he gave a shit about Habbo fashion or even knew what Habbo was, I think he would be very proud of this. You achieved this task admirably, even though you didn't really succeed in the conveying of an upside down illusion. Even if you merely "stumbled into" this outfit, it is still a testament to your resourcefulness and your ability to adapt to my outfit advice. I love the pantlegs and boots, and the touch of gray under the frame of the gown was really needed. Some more gray at the top would have given the entire outfit more depth, but that's nitpicking. If I saw this sent down the runway at one of G. Pugh's fashion shows, I would not think it to be out of place in the slightest. This is your strongest outfit so far in this competition, and I hope it's a sign of things to come from you. Well done, Nate.

Peyton125 (Peyton)
Snawl: This week was a rare opportunity to get away with submitting something overwhelmingly heavy, and you did it justice. This outfit is bold, courageous, and a bit scary even. But it's alluring and I can't take my eyes off it. I love how you used red as the base colour instead of black. You didn't cover up texture, you embraced it. The goggles behind the hijab create an inhuman appearance, and I love the flower skirt flare below the poncho. The gun holster belt adds such a nice textural touch that is in vogue with the poncho's stripes. The prezzie shoes as well are brilliant. The only part of this outfit I'm not in love with is the stethoscope (a reoccurring issue I'm having this week), but besides that, this outfit is excellent. This is you at your most raw, fierce, creative, and unrestricted. I don't know what mindset you got into this week but I hope you stay in it. A job well done, Peyton. I hope you are as proud of this outfit as I am of you this week.

nicrobbo95 (Nicole)
Snawl: The message behind your outfit is courageous; I love how you took this task as a platform to say something. Using the medium of fashion to make sociopolitical statements is very Gareth Pugh. Unfortunately, this outfit doesn't do much for me. The only aspect of this outfit I enjoy are the chains, they're a cool idea and I could easily see them on a Pugh outfit. Everything else just seems... not interesting. The mask is neat but it's one item, I think you could have made an original facemask by combining several accessories. The white towel wrap does not go with the gown at all in my opinion. Their shapes clash and the towel honestly looks photoshopped on, rather than a conscious decision. Then there are the red heels barely poking through which almost look like an error overlooked. I do like the dark red on the chest though. This is a very creative outfit sourced from a place of passion, but I wish it came with smarter design choices because several elements are unappealing. Your final product doesn't look "complete" if that makes sense.
Group #2 - elliss solomon

EagerGamin (Marq)
Snawl: Yup, this is Solomon alright. It's compact, light, wearable, but it has funk. I love that you didn't get rid of the cat face, but instead built around it to make it look more unique and like a random collage. The blue, yellow, muted brown, and black on the shoes all come together really nicely. The trick to succeeding with Solomon this week was to think about general marketability - thinking about what would work in real life and pandering to that while imbuing the outfit with enough colour, graphic, and identity to stand out in a crowd. This outfit represents all of that. I'll be honest, this was not necessarily a task I expected you to do great in, but I am pleasantly proven wrong. I think you're at your best when you use simple silhouettes and smart colour theory. Would I change anything about this outfit? Not really. I would probably play around with earrings and belts to see if you could have added more texture, but besides that, you did a really splendid job this week. Your strongest in this competition by far, well done Marq.

gnge (Lee)
Snawl: First impression? I love this a lot. It's possibly your strongest outfit in this competition. Like no joke, I wanna friggin' buy this. It reminds me of your armour outfit in LidlTerm 3 - a masterpiece I feel went unappreciated. I'm a sucker for clusters of texture, and you achieve that several times over with this outfit. The green & pink on the skirt is fantastic. The chest tattoo accessory is criminally underrated. Your shoe pairing is brilliant. However I have a huge issue with this outfit, and it's a deal-breaker: I don't get much Solomon from this at all. I see Solomon in the colour palette, shoe choice, tank top, and that's it. This outfit is too accessorized for this task, it's the gloves mainly which weren't present in your pre-advice draft, otherwise I would have told you to ditch them. The belt, while gorgeous, is really blocky and it juts out from the skirt & top instead of blending into them to look like a collage graphic. Then there's a pair of headphones - which I understand, but dislike regardless. Nothing hurts me more than punishing a designer when they submit an astonishing outfit, but your competitors did not go easy on you this week, which means the pool of people who messed up is smaller than ever. I love your presence in this competition and I hope this isn't the end.

Okeefinokee (Max)
Snawl: Mmmm this is nice. Those two-tone pants were made for this Solomon task, and I'm surprised you were the only one who realized it. By posing backwards and adding motion, you are showcasing a simple outfit at its most magical: in a real life, practical setting. You're doing more than merely presenting this outfit, you're selling it to the audience, which falls into Elliss Solomon's motif perfectly because she's a retail brand first & foremost. I love the crisscross of the black fabrics and how they seemingly adhere to every curve and contour of the body. The only part of this outfit I don't totally love is the stethoscope because it looks like a beard from this angle. A cheap, plastic, gray Halloween beard. You may think it isn't a big deal, but my God is it ever distracting. When you go minimal and use little accessories, you need to make sure the ones you use are 100% vital to the success of the outfit. It's a small flaw, but it's hard to ignore. Let's hope it doesn't drag down an otherwise stellar outfit, because I think you have a lot more to give us in this competition.

Slur (Zoetic)
Snawl: Your self-made sweater is Fabulous with a capital F! Tight-fitting clothing was what I expected with this task, however Solomon has made her share of baggy sweaters, so I definitely can't fault you for this. Your colour palette is not only unorthodox, but it is matched and mixed together with such a precise but also ragged touch. I love the shoe choice, although I would have used a different colour. You explained upon submitting that the sweater is meant to look oversized and overdesigned; you weren't trying to convey two separate scarfs atop the sweater. I must say, job well done! I see your vision crystal clear, and my guest judges in a separate chat all fell in love with this outfit without me offering the explanation. I'm out of things to say. This is a simple but astonishingly beautiful outfit resulting from a road less travelled approach to the task. This is the third week in a row where you have blown the lid off my expectations. Please don't slow down, maintain this high tier caliber of designing!
Panel Conclusion
What a way to ring in the new year! Excellent outfits all around from all nine of you. When picking a winner, I was truly spoiled for choice. Ultimately the person I am crowning is the same person whose outfit was singled out by all of my guest judges as their favourite - without any of them knowing who designed what. Elysse (LC22), congrats! Rounding out the top 3 are Zoetic (Slur) & Nate (Pine) in 2nd & 3rd, respectively.
The Bottom Three
Nicole (nicrobbo95) - Your outfit, while loaded with passion, didn't quite translate well to the runway for me. There were fundamental design slaws - mainly regarding the bottom half - that kept me from loving it.
Lee (gnge) - You did an astonishing job this week. Your outfit is one of my favourites, bar none. However I find myself asking if you did Elliss Solomon justice, or if this outfit is too off the beaten track to qualify.
Elise (fupaqueen) - As always, what you submitted is highly creative and beautiful. However, I feel it's a little bit too Elise and not enough Elise + Pugh. I'll be honest, it's entirely the jacket.
Before I eliminate anyone, I want to point out that all three of you are former task winners. All three of you are designers whom I've grown to not only respect, but admire and love. These past 48 hours I have actually been quite depressed over this panel because the thought of eliminating any of you at 9th place seems like a gross injustice. I heavily considered making this week a non-elim, however that would not be fair to the 6 contestants who fought their asses off to be safe. This elimination hurts me so, so much. Please understand that I did not enjoy this process at all in the slightest.

Nicole (nicrobbo95). I am horrifically sorry to do this, but ultimately your outfit is the only one this week that I didn't unequivocally love. Your approach to this task was perfect and I wish more people approached it how you did. Ultimately I feel your heart was too far deep into the outfit that it clouded your judgment and lead you to submit something that is not indicative of your talents. That being said, you are going out with an outfit you are proud of, which is a luxury most players don't get to experience. As bitter as this moment is, I want to assure you that I am immensely proud of you. Not only for what you accomplished in this game, but everything you've done in long-terms and short-terms these past 12 months. Despite playing on mobile and starting from the outside, you've adapted so quickly to this community's quirks and rules. I wish I was as good as you after my first year.
After that elimination, I feel exhausted & defeated. You'd think these decisions would get easier after 8 seasons but they don't. Perhaps it is my fault for getting too attached to my contestants. I can't help it, I'm a bleeding heart.
Your 6th task is posted and ready to go. Good luck, final eight.
