RUNWAY

Snawl's

Season 8

Final 7... This competition started with 14 designers, each of them extremely talented and with their own impressive bodies of established work, and you guys are the top 50% of that group. Give yourselves a hand! After this week's elimination, we'll arrive at our final six, which is when I give out the coveted Snawlterm black jackets. Our international destination for Season 8 is a country I've been obsessed with since I was a kid. It started with its peculiar name, but I soon fell in love with its otherworldly landscapes, lush nature, delicious quisine, and Nordic culture.

We will be travelling to. . . . . Reykjavik, Iceland!

However, I only got six black jackets and plane tickets to give out. One of you won't make it to the airport, sadly. And the deciding factor is our next task...

Brace yourselves. This task was not designed to be easy.

Task #7

Spring is Arriving!
Jacket On, or Jack(it) Off?

Example7.gif

Now that the holidays are over and everyone's waiting for the snow to melt, Seventeen Magazine is hard at work assembling their Spring editions, and they've commissioned you guys to design an outfit for a two-page spread! You will be designing two variations of one outfit - one variation with a jacket, and one without. At panel, your two variations will be superimposed upon each other and presented in a GIF format like my example above. The rules are as follows:

  • You can "take off" more things than just a jacket, so long as it is a change reasonably achievable by undressing a layer (IE your shoes shouldn't go from flats to heels, or anything else that is unrelated to a jacket).

  • You can add additional items on the underlayer so long as it isn't too hard to imagine it being covered by the jacket (you'll notice I added a belt sash and handkerchief in my example photo that weren't present in the jacket version).

  • Any underlayer items or details visible in the jacket layer shouldn't change drastically once you remove the jacket. I am willing to suspend my disbelief and let one or two small details slide, but a shirt shouldn't go from red to blue.

Those are the base rules. However, keep in mind that this is Seventeen Magazine. Their target audience is girls and young women. They are family-friendly and do not promote an immodest or promiscuous image. Avoid the fishnets and panties.

Another thing to take into consideration is that this is the Spring Edition. Bright, bubbly, youthful colours are expected, along with clothing that is easy, wearable, and not too restrictive. It doesn't have to be 100% bright or look like a rainbow threw up, just make sure the balance of colour you create is happy & inviting. You probably have more questions, and if you do, don't hesitate to ask me.

*Last few things: If you want to see what your outfit's variations look like as a GIF prior to submitting, ask me and I'll edit them together at my earliest convenience. However, I am only permissing one edit per contestant, as I am busy irl.

*Also it should go without saying, but when you submit your outfit variations, they need to be from the same angle, same pose, and same camera resolution (like my example photo). If you are having trouble achieving this, contact me and I can photograph you on Habbo.com or Habboon.

*And yes, you need to maintain the same model for both variations. Removing one's jacket doesn't magically change their skin, hair, or face.

Panel

Welcome to your seventh panel, final seven. I am pleasantly surprised to see the array of directions taken by the cast this week. No two outfits truly look the same, and I feel like I can see each designer's personality imbued into their submission this week. As you know, we're getting ready to leave for Reykjavik immediately after this panel. The remainder of this competition will take place in Iceland. Sadly, one of you will not be joining us. It's time to find out who that one unlucky soul is...

I don't think I need to tell you this, but going forward, your creative limits will be tested. These next tasks were not designed with comfort or ease in mind. We're here to discover a Snawlterm champion, and the process is a treacherous track. Please be on your A-game in these coming weeks. Take care of yourselves. Eat, get adequate sleep, don't design while stressed, etc.

You all [presumably] missed Harri, so he's back to guest judge once more.

Once more Harri, let's judge some outfits.
It's time to see whose Seventeen spreads are a hit with the younger audiences, and who gets rejected and made into a billion embarrassing memes on TikTok.

fupaqueen (Elise)

Snawl: I had a feeling you would kill this task, and you didn't disappoint. What I love most from this outfit is how it seems to incorporate this fad among 18 to 24-year-old women who raid thrift stores, on the prowl for vintage wear. This outfit looks so modern and fresh, but it has elements of the past. It's the type of clothing that warrants 200+ Instagram photos in front of a mirror with some dimly lit fairy lights behind. This outfit's strongest element is the loose fabric. It evokes gentleness, and you then enhance that tone with perfectly feathered shades of pink, brown, and burgundy. There is no unique glitch or amazing technical feat - you're not showing me anything I've never seen... but what you are showing me is that you are akin to a machine when it comes to designing wearable, accessible clothing which is what Seventeen is all about. I wanna buy this outfit and I'm not young, nor do I like pink that much, but I'm sold! Extravagant work this week.

HarriExample.gif

.Uhu: I am in love with these colours and the feel of the materials. Such nice layering, you didn't go a youthful route, yet it still quite works for this task. Similarly to another person, I think the strap could have done with being a little different on both, as you would have to take this strap off to take the jacket off, so that makes it feel like it's not part of the outfit for me. But the layers and cuts in these fabrics really makes me not care about any of these flaws, because this whole ensemble is HOT! It also really works for the warmer day time and colder evening. Your pose is a perfect choice to show off your chosen items.

Slur
(Zoetic)

Snawl: The tone of this outfit is boisterous, fun, spritely. I love the green - oh the green! It goes so well with the hues of blues. You are using the butterfly decal and the sword graphic in an inventive way that evokes a backpack strap. You seem to have understood what I wanted from this task rather well. However, there are some creative choices I'm not particularly loving. The shoes could have been coloured something else besides the outfit's dominant colour; it causes them to get lost in the shuffle instead of being used as a stand-out. Also the puff jacket was an interesting choice I am not completely sold on, it is a bit shapeless and awkward with the underlayer. It looks like blobitecture if anything. However, where it shines it shines bright. I was worried for your sake at the start of this task, seeing as your wheelhouse is that of darker, murkier colours and intricate, heavy layers. But instead you held your own, and showed me your true versatility. Well done!

HarriExample.gif

.Uhu: I actually quite like this, it's weird don't get me wrong, but your underlayer is really fashionable.. the details you present are exquisite. I love how you have the rip/fastens down the dress in an asymmetric manner, then it stops at the bow. I can't fault your underlayer at all. You do lose a bit of shape with your jacket, but I actually don't mind as it's a nice contrast of the form-fitted dress. The way you used the butterfly tattoo on both & flipped the colours is also genius, love that. The strap on the jacket fits really nice too, same as the belt that elongates the jacket, I think without that belt it wouldn't work as well as it does.. so overall some really smart decisions in my eyes, nice styling/pose too, gives you the playful vibe this task wanted!

Round7three.gif

Pine (Nate)

Snawl: This outfit has components I really like, but overall this submission is underwhelming. The best aspects of this outfit are the colours, and the pants + shoes. Those baggy cargo pants are so hot right now, and I'm disappointed more people didn't use them. The pastel lavender, white, and mint green look really lovely, and your layering is simple but effective. For me, this outfit's biggest flaw is the lack of innovation from the "undressing" effect. This task was a chance to get away with using an amount of accessories one could never otherwise get away with in any other task. Then when it came time to remove accessories, IE the scarf, you left it on. The GIF component didn't inspire you as much as I hoped it would. The coat layer in combo with the scarf & pants makes this look like winterwear, not spring. Last week you took a minimal approach and you won because the level of detail was impeccable. This week however, the detail is lackluster. Sorry, Nate.

HarriExample.gif

.Uhu: A lovely outfit, wearable and pleasant fabrics and materials, styling choices are minimal and nice for this task too. However, the outfit leads A LOT to be desired, you could have done so much with under the jacket, even just removing the scarf would've had much more an impact. It's just a bit lackluster.. and at this point of a competition like this you're gonna need more of.. well a design, something for us to clutch onto and see your USP, for this task it would've been really nice to see something more playful and fun underneath to bring homage to the task even more.

Round7four.gif

Okeefinokee (Max)

Snawl: Although this outfit shows far more skin than I would ever recommend for this task, I am willing to suspend the majority of my disbelief. Seventeen Magazine has made an effort in recent years to include more body-positive photos, and some of them have indeed been revealing photos of models' backs. That being said, I wish the nude effect didn't extend to the skirt, as it's hard to ignore bare thighs and potentially some ass cheek. Seventeen Mag has been around since 1944 - if they haven't gone promiscuous by now then they'll likely never do so. As for the technicals, this outfit is really, really good. I love the duplicated silver strap following the same angle. The heels are nice, the headphones are that kiss of youth energy this spread needed. Using the maid top for a nude effect isn't anything new, but it's tasteful and executed really well here. You seem to be designing with a sense of assuredness, and it's coming across in your final products. Well done.

HarriExample.gif

.Uhu: This outfit is indeed more of the mature end of this week, I actually like to think this isn't a nude illusion at all and it is just brown fabric, but I'm not 100% sure if it is meant to be that way. The curved lines are impeccable and really nice to look at, I feel as if the strap around the shoulder blades shouldn't excist either on the jacket or without, of course you could remove and take it off but doing it this way would leave you another opportunity to use a different item on one of your outfits. I wish there was more character in this as I think everything would be sold much more, especially for a magazine aimed at teens.

Seventeen.png
Round7five.gif

Peyton125 (Peyton)

Snawl: I love that you love loud colour so much, but I wish you knew how to taper it with some more muted hues to give your canvas more depth, and more places for the eye to look. There is only so much interest bright on bright can convey. When the human eye gets overwhelmed, it gets bored and tries to move on. That being said, the manner of which you spread the colours out is stunning. I am in love with the underlayer of this outfit. I interpret the top as an intricate graphic or collage. The geometric pants go really nicely with the shoes. Ultimately I feel the top layer is a bit too dressed. Like another one of your fellow competitors this week, I feel this could pass for winterwear easier than for springtime. You are removing what seems like two giant coats, only to reveal a 3rd coat..? Concept and creativity are 100%, but once again you run into issues with refining your outfit. I hope you can understand what I am saying and begin applying it. Thanks.

HarriExample.gif

.Uhu: At first glance, this is a powerhouse of patterns and colours, really fun prints and comfy clothing.. however I can't help feel the chaotic energy coming from this, and it just gives me anxiety, so not the good chaotic. It's on the edge of being tasteful, with your jacket on it is definitely more tasteful and wearable, without it becomes confusing and not as polished, a bit of a mess. The layering choices definitely help your jacket. Definitely on age point for this task, I see a teen wanting this jacket, the underlayer on the other hand, I don't think a teen would go for this.

Seventeen.png
Round7six.gif

LC22 (Elysse)

Snawl: You understood this task so well, I'm half convinced you created it yourself before implanting it into my memory to get me to do it. This is stellar! The way that necklace sews itself immaculately into the coat, only to be removed to reveal a gorgeous near-monochrome lavender dress. I was under the impression I disliked that retro belt, but this outfit has converted me. It ties in to the vest, backpack, and dress trim so perfectly. There's an almost vintage, Americana girl-next-door familiarity to it - something I'd see Lana Del Rey wear in her Lust For Life era. The pink heels are adorable without being tacky. This is so approachable and friendly, but it is not as the sacrifice of designer ingenuity. The only part of this presentation I don't completely love is the decision to have pink hair, but that's is honestly a non-issue. You reinvigorated my love for purple, excellent work this week!

HarriExample.gif

.Uhu: This is the most youthful and fun outfit this week. Definitely the most "Girly" too, which is a brilliant outcome as it sets you apart from everyone. First of all the way you created this jacket, I actually don't know how you did it, I'm assuming that's a necklace that creates the effect of it ripping through the jacket creating that new shape, then you have the collar that you created on top of that, brilliant work. The underlayer is pleasant, I think a lot of younger teens would love this outfit, it's very playful and has great shape. You're one of the only people to actually create a whole character this week too, that definitely sells this. Your overlayer was definitely the star out of both your images.

Seventeen.png
Week7seven.gif

EagerGamin (Marq)

Snawl: Oh Marq, you were so, so, soooo close to nailing this task. Your colour palette is one of the best of the week, your black handbag & shoes are stunning, you had it all... but when it came time to elevate this outfit for the runway, you instead went pedestrian. The jacket is definitely minimal and a bit on the safe side, but it's pleasant to look at and is definitely in vogue with the task. When we get to the underlayer however, all hell breaks loose. One of my co-judges said the pink top look like a bib and now I can't unsee it. Then the skirt - which looked good on the jacket layer - suddenly looks like a diaper or one of those old, saggy, vintage granny panties. We're at the stage in the competition where minimalism is definitely a risk, and I will always appreciate risk-taking. However the outfit has a lot of fundamental design choices that just don't jive at all, and when you're designing on a cracked foundation, you seldom can turn it around. I'm worried, Marq.

HarriExample.gif

.Uhu: Interesting, so you submitted a bib?, This does have an aspect of design, and a minimal vibe that I quite like actually, the jacket on is very tasteful, it's actually quite nice, lovely texturing & pleasant colouring. I'll presume these are shorts, which is very in with the teens these days. The obvious flaw here is when the jacket is removed... How is this white layer overlapping the shorts all of a sudden? This shows lack of thought, and also takes it away from shorts, and moves it into a diaper kinda thing.. with a bib.., so basically a 17 month outfit and a 17 year old outfit you have given us.

Panel Conclusion
That's a wrap for Week 7, and I am very impressed with what everybody submitted. Like I said above, I can really start to feel each designer's individual personalities come through in these outfits. Because I'm an extra bitch, I will be doing this week's elimination in a call-out order style.

The Bottom Two

Marq (EagerGamin) - This task was designed to be tough, and this week you seemed to feel the heat the most out of everyone. Your concept was solid, but your final execution left a lot to be desired.

Nate (Pine) - Your tame, almost minimal submission was lovely. However I feel as if you didn't grab the bull by the horns this week. There was so much magic you could've achieved with the jacket layer, but you left it all untapped.

 . . . . .The 6th black jacket goes to . . . . .

Nate (Pine)... You are the final recipient of a black jacket. You are safe, and may join your fellow competitors on the plane. These next tasks in Iceland are going to be difficult, however I can easily see your style and design approach finding success with them. Hopefully the change of scenery invigorates you again and allows you to unlock your full potential. Well done, and good luck.

Ohh Marq. Marqinson. Marqy-Marq. I first want to start by saying I am so proud of you for everything you've accomplished. You fought like hell, and had an experience more difficult than most. But when you shined, it was extraordinary. This cast was bloodthirsty and didn't give you an iota of slack, but you battled your way past half of them. After this game, I'll return to hosting short-terms avidly, and I better see you come around. It's been far too long since I last had you! Thank you for always trying your best, and being such a good sport. Out of everyone eliminated so far, I think I'll miss your personality the most. Farewell, pal.

Woo, top 6! I am so happy to be at this leg of the competition, but I also don't want it to ever come to an end. Sadly it must, and one of your eliminations is right around the corner. Your 8th task is posted, good luck!
