Season 8

Task #1

Spread those wings, we're taking off!

Welcome to the first week of Season 8!

For your first task, you are to design an outfit that duplicates the colours & patterns of a specific butterfly or moth species of your choice! Simply google "butterfly species" or "moth species" and you'll be treated to an array of gorgeous lepidopterans to choose from. Almost any colour palette you can imagine likely exists on a species if you look hard enough.

Anyone can duplicate a colour palette. The people who succeed in this task will be the designers who evoke the patterns of their respective insect in their outfit.

It is important that when you submit, you tell me the species that inspired your outfit.

Lastly, because this is a high stakes long-term, I wish to make this challenging for you. All butterfly/moth wing accessories are banned for this task! You can use non-butterfly winged accessories (like cyberpunk wings, demon wings, etc) but anything that evokes literal butterfly or moth wings will not be accepted. This task is about colours & patterns; you do not need to dress like a butterfly or evoke a winged shape. You can if you want to, but it's not necessary.

The due date for this task is Sunday, November 20th at 8PM EST.

Thank you, and good luck! If you have any questions or concerns about this task

(or any future tasks), do not hesitate to ask me.

Panel

Hello & welcome to your first panel of Season 8! All 14 of you submitted on time and I didn't have to harrass anyone, so thanks for that. Right out of the gate I wanna say that the overall quality of outfits submitted this week is really, really good. Season 8 has started on a very high note! Now that we've obtained it, let's maintain it. Continue to try your hardests with each given week, and don't forget to have fun with these tasks.

Because this is our first task, I have not brought in a guest judge. I will be judging this one by myself for the sake of simplicity. Starting next week however, I will be inviting an array of [hopefully] familiar faces amongst this community to help judge your outfits and offer up a second opinion. As you know, I am merely one person, and my opinion should never be considered the be-all, end-all authority of Habbo fashion. An eliminated outfit in this LT could very well be the winner in another host's LT.

With all that out of the way, let's judge some outfits!
It's time to see which contestants took off with ease, which ones needed a push, and who died while still in the cocoon.

*Outfits are always judged in order of submission

Species: Cinnabar Moth (Tyria jacobaeae)

Snawl: My biggest problem with this outfit is that the gothic gown is doing 85% of the heavy lifting! While I do agree it takes some creative genius to recognize a piece of clothing matching the pattern of your moth, I argue that I would've loved to see more resourcefulness from your side. What you did add however is gorgeous. The cape slicing into the sides of the gown is stunning, I love it. I am also enjoying the black handkerchief, although the cape & earrings combo is really tired and overdone at this point. This is a beautiful outfit, but I am wondering if it's longterm material or not. Also, you probably could've gotten away with adding more than one shade of red. Not a bad start, but I'm hungry for more creativity from you.

Species: Picasso Moth (Baorisa heiroglyphica)

Snawl: The moth you picked is difficult to convey because it features a lot of neat, contained lines. Your outfit, as lovely as it is, is rather chaotic and doesn’t make a whole lot of sense in this context. You’re using a lot of black and I wish you subbed some of it out for yellow or red. Another aspect dragging your outfit down is inconsistency of fabrics. This really is only a problem with white outfits because white highlights textures otherwise not noticeable. On the head you have smooth, shiny, futuristic-looking accessories, but they’re paired with a sweater & scarf that evoke warm, snuggly, cuddly winter wear. On the positive side, this is a great example of the backwards effect looking head-on. The bottom half is gorgeous, the pants, shoes, socks, and tip of the scarf all come together stunningly. This is an okay start to Season 8, but I know you’re capable of far greater.

Species: Bilateral gynandromorphism on Goliath Birdwing

(Ornithoptera goliath)

Snawl: This is breathtaking, Lee. I'm so happy you resubmitted because your first outfit was lackluster and I was going to rip into you at panel for it. This, however, is a knock-out. This task is inherently bilateral, so you chose a hyper-specific option to enable you to get away with submitting something wonky that doesn't follow a lateral symmetric pattern. The chaos conveyed by the strips of green, black, & white is intoxicating, I can't stop looking at it! The subtle yellow on the shoes is equally amazing and really encapsulates the chartreuse ombre this butterfly typically has. You managed to make the stethoscope look like, well, not a stethoscope. This is an excellent start to Season 8 and I can't wait to see what you have in store.

Species: Rosy Maple Moth (Dryocampa rubicunda)

Snawl: This is a strong showing from you, Lob. What I love about this outfit is that it's theoretically quite simple: 4 or 5 items with a matching colour palette... yet it simultaneously looks so intricate and complex. This is simply smart designing through & through. There are so many unfilled slots that you could have crammed an accessory into, but that would have just cheapened the look and taken away from its alluring magic. Normally I hate gumboots but this is one of the few rare occasions where I don't find myself wishing you chose a simple heel. Everything about this outfit screams technicality.

I'm so grateful you continued to hone your skill after FreshFaces, because this is just a treat. Well done!

Okeefinokee
(Max)

Species: Eastern Tiger Swallowtail (Papilio glaucus)

Snawl: On paper, this outfit shouldn't work. Gas mask? Train costume? Binoculars? Indian royalty gown? Whaaat? Yet not only does it work, but it almost looks like a piece of concept art designed pixel by pixel. It's staggering how beautiful this gown is, and how well every component comes together. When the community collectively decides to reject an item for being too weird, you instead make it the focus of your outfits. I love how this is your first LT submission and you're already using motion to warp the shoe shape. My only issue with this outfit: I wish you used a bit less gold because the butterfly tends to be more yellow than orange according to Google. Besides that minor hiccup, this is fantastic. Thank you, Max!

Species: Large Marble (Euchloe ausonides)

Snawl: You were onto something; the basis of this outfit is great. I love the use of both the kimono dress and the spotted top. The way you sectioned the different shades of green is beautiful. However, you run into issues with accessorizing. ALL of the head & face accessories need to go, they cheapen the outfit. Then the scarf & buckles should either be removed, or styled in a way that doesn't make them sink into the bodice and drown. The buckles are really old & expected, you gotta be very careful with them in longterms because we hosts have grown so sick of them. I wish you asked me for outfit advice because I would've told you to tone down the accessories and focus harder on the upper body. Overall: pretty, but unpolished.

(Elysse)

Species: Sapho Longwing (Heliconius sapho)

Snawl: I like this a lot. It exemplifies what it means to be simple but effective. It's the type of outfit where once you stare at it for a bit, your appreciation just continues to multiply. On your chosen butterfly, blue & white have the most movement, so using those colours for the inner detail was smart. That robe with the jacket and backpack straps is a gorgeous graphic that evokes harmony. Out of all the pantleg outfits submitted this week, this is the most polished and runway-ready. You even managed to use the overused jagged belt in an interesting way. The only piece of this outfit that has me concerned is the ear pod, but besides that, this is a lovely start to Season 8 and I'm excited to see what else you design for us.

Shookith
(Kelcie)

Species: Madagascan Sunset Moth (Chrysiridia rhipheus)

Snawl: I am confused by this outfit, and more so by you ignoring my outfit advice. Your colour palette seems largely disconnected from that of your moth, and you didn't represent the black spots or stripes anywhere. The majority of the moth is blue & orange, yet your canvas is dedicated mostly to browns, purples, & pink. In your outfit advice I strongly advised you to convey the ombre colour transition, but the only thing you changed was the earring. I genuinely do like this outfit, I find the colours interesting and I could see it stomping down a runway easily. However, this task came with a specific goal and you didn't achieve it. These tasks are only going to get harder, so if you're overwhelmed on Week 1, then I don't know if I can realistically see you advancing.

SealChowderr
(Lusealiya)

Species: Giant Leopard Moth (Hypercompe scribonia)

Snawl: In terms of technical feat, I think you killed the task! This is one of those outfits that walks the fine line between fashion piece and costume. I love the generous black splotches, and how you even incorporated some subtle blue and gold under your chin. The only flaw worth mentioning is the same one I mentioned in your outfit advice: the feathered cowl is a really overused clothing piece, and you just gotta be very careful when using it because it can make any outfit look "suddenly familiar" if you know what I mean - especially from the head-on pose. Other than that, this is a good start for you. It doesn't blow me away but it shows me that you are resourceful and smart with textures. Thanks, Seal!

Species: Arge Moth (Apantesis arge)

Snawl: This was one of my favourite outfits of the week, however, it wasn't until I placed your outfit directly next to your moth that I noticed the disconnect of the colour palette. The moth's base colour is white, but yours is beige. I don't know if it was a creative decision or if it happened from certain computer screens giving off different saturations. Anyway, the outfit itself I think it superb! I love the consistent vertical black lines, the cat face was a good choice because it adds just that extra dimension of texture. You used the orange sparingly but wisely. The only thing I don't love is the hood. Had your beiges been white, I'd shoot this up into the Top 3. Try to be more careful about this in future tasks. Thanks!

Species: Garden Tiger Moth (Arctia caja)

Snawl: This outfit's great. It's fun, compact, not over-designed. The checkered pants are such a smart direction and I'm surprised no one else took it this week. I feel like the geometric crop hoodie was made for this outfit, which is a pretty incredible feat given how overused it can be. My only minor issue with this outfit is that I feel you could've gotten a little more creative with the black patterns on your upper half. There are certain face & neck accessories that're coming to my mind that I believe could've chopped up the dominate white and given a stronger allusion to the moth. Other than that minor stipulation, I think you achieved this task admirably. This is a great start and I'm intrigued by what else you got.

Slur
(Zoetic)

Species: Achemon Sphinx (Eumorpha achemon)

Snawl: Oh shit, I didn't know Piglet plays Project Runway. On a serious note, you have some very compelling components to this outfit. I enjoy the flared out jacket and the dinosaur top because they evoke your moth's textures to a tee. The dabs of burgundy could have been conveyed better, however. The jacket buttons are cool, but the belt and boots seem too linear and neat, whereas they're more spontaneous and chaotic on the moth. The biggest issue for me though is the decision to colour your skin & hair the same colour as your moth. It's a rookie blow I don't expect in a longterm, especially from you.

I wasn't looking for a costume. Overall this is a solid effort but a few flaws hold it back from being a threat this week.

Pine
(Nate)

Species: Salt Marsh Moth (Estigmene acrea)

Snawl: Out of everyone who asked for outfit advice, no one benefitted more than you. Your draft submission was really weak and it quite possibly could have gotten you eliminated. This outfit however is sublime, I love it. Using the cape & skirt on this task specifically was great because they flare out and give a wing effect. There is definitely a dark-to-light ombre transition on this outfit, it's just not as in-your-face as most ombres are. My only complaint for this outfit is that I would have liked to see the black spots on the moth integrated more thoroughly in this outfit. Also the gray on the backpack straps is a bit distracting. Besides that, I think this outfit is a triumph. Please continue to push yourself, because you're truly too talented to be playing it safe. Excellent work, Nate!

Species: Magpie Moth (Abraxas glossulariata)

Snawl: Your outfit features a meticulous homage to the moth's spot pattern, and I commend you highly for that. This outfit is indisputably high-fashion. A gown would've been the no duh! approach to this specific moth species, so the fact that you went pantlegs is telling me that you're not here to waste my time. You're giving me innovation and you currently have my full attention. The only substantial issue I have with this outfit is that I wish it was a little less heavy on retro/alt hotel clothing. I'm always far more impressed by base clothing or base plus retro than I am with an outfit that is just entirely retro. I also would've welcomed a more consistent shoe choice. Other than that, you really shined brightly this week. Well done!

Panel Conclusion
Realistically, everybody in the top 6 could each win this task. This was a very strong week and having to choose a winner was tough. Ultimately I'm picking the designer who not only challenged themselves, but who also challenged me & my task the hardest. Congratulations, Lee (gnge)!
Rounding out the Top 3 is Max (Okeefinokee) & Nate (Pine).

The Bottom Three

Zoetic (Slur) - Your outfit featured tremendous textures. However, you ran into problems with styling that causes it to inch into the realm of costume.

Xav (Xav.Smi712) - Your outfit is elegant and features some incredibly smart graphics... however, at its soul, it's just a gothic gown with some extra accessories.

Kelcie (Shookith) - A chic outfit with a gorgeous colour palette. I love your eye for detail. That being said, you didn't really do the task, did you?

I wanna give all 3 of you a second chance, but I can't. This competition needs to move on.

Kelcie (Shookith). I'm sorry Kelc, but this task was not that difficult to understand, and they're just going to get harder from here. For you to not grasp it tells me you need a bit more experience with playing PR before you can rumble with these bigger dogs. But before you depart, I want to say that I appreciate you. You've done incredible things for this community, and I speak for the entire Discord server when I say we're eternally grateful for you. I know your first introduction to this community was a bit hostile and unwelcoming, and I would like to publicly apologize to you for that. Please don't give up on PR. Your passion & creativity is too precious to give up on.

Following that elimination, it's time to begin our second task. Your next task is posted, I'll see you all on Week 2's page. Good luck!
