TASK #8
I Like What
You're
Sportin'!
Leading The Charge
The contemporary fashion world is always evolving to embrace whatever is happening on the streets. With the advancements of fabric technology, certain sporting and workout items that used to feel restrictive or uncomfortable are now bleeding into everyday use. This has given rise to the fashion trend known as Athleisure!
Athleisure is exactly what it sounds like: Outfits for leisure that contain athletic items. Tracksuits, sports bras, sweatpants, gym shorts, jerseys, swimsuits, sports jackets, and sporting accessories are being paired with everyday non-athletic garments to create the trendy Frankenstein's Monster that is Athleisure... and I love it! So for your final task to determine the black jacket final six, you are to design a runway-ready outfit inspired by Athleisure. This task is very simple, so it's up to you to make sure the athletic contribution to your outfit gives it that edge needed to stand out at panel. You have a 1/7 chance of going home.
The six designers who survive this panel will be flying to our international destination of this season, which will be. . . .
Rio De Janeiro, Brazil!
The rest of this season's tasks will feature a heavy dose of Brazilian themes and culture.
Good luck! Hope to see you on the plane.
Hello, final seven. Welcome to your final panel before we depart for Brazil.
The jet is gassed and waiting for us, but sadly, I only have six plane tickets.
The deciding factor for who gets a ticket on the plane, was a simple task: Athleisure. After last week's slightly underwhelming panel, I am happy to report that this week, all seven of you understood the assignment and delivered very unique and beautiful athleisure outfits! None of you "missed" the task, and so that makes my decision much harder because I can't eliminate anybody this week on an easy technicality. So well done! The seven of you are a fierce and ferocious batch.
Harry (.Uhu) is joining us at panel one final time.

This outfit is astounding. This half-dressed, anti-commercial approach is exactly what I'd expect to see at an athleisure themed runway show. Despite the chaos, the bra and jockstrap provide enough obvious anatomical accuracy to ground everything, which is an interesting dichotomy against the mismatched pantlegs, arm bands, loose fabrics, and oddly placed earrings. This is what it means to be couture without coming across as purposeless. The subtle hue change between the top and bottom is awesome, and I love the navy blue runners too. This looks wearable enough to be on a backup dancer in Tate McRae's "Greedy" music video, but unique enough to be spotted at the Met Gala as well. This is your strongest outfit yet, and I love that it was from a task you hated and thought you were gonna bomb. Expert work!
Well, someone wants to make it to fashion week!, Honestly this is so cool, if someone wants an example of what high fashion is, well here it is! I can already see a whole collected based on just this one outfit. Your styling manages to uplift an already perfect outfit, I love the metal jewellery too, it adds like a punk edge to it which is really enjoyable. The metallic coloured shoes next to the matte, stone textured clothing balances the whole thing so well. You also thought about the realistic aspects of it too with the removable jacket to turn it into a swimsuit, this is pure athleisurewear to me. If I am being honest, definitely my favourite submission this week, you pushed yourself but also had constraint, that's what made this so appealing. Really good job!

This is your strongest performance yet... and it's such a casual design, too. This is athleisure through & through, but I also wouldn't disagree with somebody wearing this at the mall. It's not haute couture, nor is it trying to be. It's just tasteful and modern. I love the two shades of red, and the added waist fabric being made to look like an extension of the jacket being tied around your waist. I love the runners, the Tonka truck jeans, and the headphones. It's such a contrast to Arber's outfit above, yet you both could not have nailed your respective approaches any better. It takes confidence and a strong conviction of one's talent to be able to submit something so commercial like this at the final seven, and I am so thankful and happy that you've arrived at this level of designer you find yourself at. Great work!
This could be a character straight from Jet Set Radio, which is definitely a good thing as it definitely resembles athleisurewear. I love it, the arm of the jacket coming off your shoulder & your shoulder bag matching this angle allowing your top to be seen is a really nice touch. Each piece could be interchange-able and worn in different ways which is even better for the marketing side. I have no negatives about this, it matches the task and it is very wearable, it's not as flashy as some of the others, but it doesn't need to be. A lovely week for you! Good job.

Like I keep finding myself saying: this is an Elysse design if I've ever seen one. The unrestrained fabrics that are desperately gripping themselves to wherever your model could fit them, is a very interesting take on athleisure. The idea to half-cover the face is weird as hell and probably isn't the most athleisure adjacent approach one could make with head accessories, but I honestly love it. Obscuring the most human features of a model is always fun and I'll never get sick of it. I love the heavy fabric layers on the arms, and the unexpected shredded fabric on the torso that exposes certain portions of the body that everyone is expecting to be covered. This outfit has an adventurous quality to it that I love. My main piece of criticism for you, is that I find the colour palette to be a bit dull. I like the blue & white, but the grey could have definitely been something louder; or, maybe a 4th colour introduced very sparingly? That's my only complaint, otherwise you did a really good job this week.
This reminds me of like a regular outfit which has been taken and renovated to be a more Avant Garde version, whilst keeping its original aesthetic. I love your direction of this, it's very different from the rest, definitely stands out. The tearing of the fabric creating the effect of it wrapping round your body is really nice. I think it was a smart move just focusing on an oversized jumper with the oversized arms, it gives the outfit room to breath and feel alive, very athleisure. The head accessory may be slightly confusing on what you are trying to convey with this specific task, but it is unique and edgy, I imagine it looking really cool on a photoshoot in real life. The little shoes with the little Nike tick are so adorable btw, I love that touch of realism, it helps bring home the task in hand. Very good work!

Had you asked me to pick my favourite outfit from your prototypes this week, you could very may well be polishing off your second win. Instead, you submitted... this... it's not bad at all, but the upper chest region is a bit boring. I can't tell if you simply used beige, or if you tried to do a nude illusion and it just isn't working. I like the bird pocket accessory + the rainbow icon combo, but it could have been used to a much more engaging degree. Then we get lower: I like the pants and love the heels, but that ribbon belt is just robbing my attention for all the wrong reasons. The colour palette is nice but a bit oversaturated, too. I wish the silver on the heels made another appearance elsewhere. On the positive side: you understood athleisure very well, and I adore the head accessories. The punk attitude and hot pink is a great look. I just wish the rest of the outfit packed the same punch.
I think you are on the borderline of athleisure, this outfit could be worn as a regular outfit, but there are details which might contradict, like the hat for instance, which in all fairness isn't actually doing anything for this outfit. The outfit has quirks and edges but fails to convey a strong sense of style, leaving it feel a tad awkward, as if something is off. Maybe it's the clunky belt paired with the super slim top and bottom. Maybe a different colour palette for some of these items would have helped merge them together more and show off the prints you have on the trouser leg and boob. It is a nice outfit though don't get me wrong. It's just at the stage of the competition where you can't afford to be making more than 1 small mistake. Don't be afraid to go bold!

You had the right idea at the beginning of the week. The 2nd prototype you showed me in particular was pretty great. Sadly, you did not submit it. This outfit has an essence of it, but the final presentation feels less realized. I love a deep lush red monochrome, but I just don't think athleisure was the best task to use it, especially since you should be trying to spotlight the sporty fabrics and accessories, while monochrome tends to blend it away. The backpack straps add nothing positive, it's just an unneeded detail that takes away from the undershirt. I really enjoy your bottom half, but I believe it's not meant to be paired with this top half. It feels like this outfit was designed by two separate people in different rooms with no ways to communicate. Thankfully the outfit does feel in the scope of athleisure. You didn't miss the mark per se, I just don't love your creative vision this week, unfortunately.
I absolutely love the print you have going on with your jumper, this is the statement piece here, the design of it is superb, it all looks like one piece the way you have played with all the shadows and prints of each item. But then you kind of lose us with the rest of the outfit. I wished you ran with the same intentions of the jacket with your whole outfit, or just something which would let that jumper shine as much as it should! The ankle warmers are cool though, I love the look of them too. Maybe just a slight styling issue this week is all, I'd love to see it pushed even further into the more editorial world.

It's a very intriguing idea to hear athleisure and go into the realm of extreme motor sports, but it's an angle that definitely gives you an advantage because nobody else is doing it. It certainly could have come out unwearable and camp, and while you do have some very daunting experimentations in that direction, I can say you successfully avoided the trap. The running shoes and backpack straps ground the outfit into athleisure because they are actual sporting equipment, and not just fabric made to look sporty. The rest of the gown is quite gorgeous. I love the long loin cloth interrupting the pantlegs and making the three pieces come together as a sort of symmetrical slim gown with graphical segments. The blank rectangle up top is... interesting... I don't know if I love it, but I do appreciate its continuity of the cubist art direction. Overall this outfit is super risky and unique, and it mostly pays off. Very nicely done.
This is probably the most Avant Garde, artsy submission this week. It screams editorial & I love it!! The mismatched asymmetrical aspects along with the symmetrical elements really brings it to life... the colour pallete is perfect for the task and for this outfit, really good editing skills in this outfit. I love the way you elongated the sides of the outfits with the perfect choice of top and bottoms, it shows the effort you have put in. That grey rectangle on the middle of your chest may slightly look like a Teletubby TV.. but I'm not mad at that. Could this be worn everyday? Hmm that is questionable, maybe if the skirt is removable, or if it's turned into trousers or something. That may possibly be a thing that could fault your score. A very lovely submission though, great job this week!

Growing up in & around Edmonton, I saw a lot of personalities on the ski hills. Bright colours are the easiest way for extreme snowsport enjoyers to add their own flare to the slopes... but the ones who were really confident in their abilities to stay dry and not fall into the snow, often wore skimpy clothes to flex said confidence. While I don't think I've seen fishnets per se, I've definitely seen girl snowboarders in bras, short shorts, etc... so your approach, while eye-grabbingly impractical, is not as unrealistic as most non-Canadians may think. Your colour palette on the top half is very spunky and screams early-to-mid 2000s punk, which has always been very analogous and closely aligned with counterculture and extreme sports. You're literally making me nostalgic for Edmonton: a city I more or less hated living in! While I adore this outfit, my only worthwhile complaint is that some of your fellow competitors are having an easy time outshining it. Does this outfit bask in the glory that is athleisure? 100% yes. Does it push the boundaries of the medium? Not quite. Thank you and good luck.
At first glance this could seem a tad pedestrian, but there are some splendid details when you look into it further. One of the first things I noticed was the way you layered the scarf over the top, the little splices of colour being extended out into the chest is just so satisfying, maybe you could have pushed that even further and added a cool print to your legs. Imagine the whole thing being a bodysuit or something based on the layering your have up top, that would have been really cool. But yeah the only negative is you may have played it slightly safe with the bottom half, I can definitely see the top half being very marketable as an oversized jumper, which can be popular in athleisure.

Becca (oyt). I don't know where to begin. First and foremost, your run in this competition has been amazing, and entertaining as hell, and I can speak for this entire community when I say we are all so proud of how far you've come and how much you have grown. You were 100% supposed to be eliminated on Week 3, I hated that outfit... but then somebody quit, and I figured what the hell, I'll spare you. And I'm so thankful things happened the way they did because watching you unfold creatively has felt like such a privilege. You may be new, but we have all fallen head over heels with your artistic abilities, chipper personality, and hunger for everything creative. I hope you continue partaking in any & all games you can get your hands on. You're awesome, Becca. Thank you for everything you've accomplished here in Snawlterm, and I hope this is only the beginning of a long and fruitful stay in our weird little fashion community. We are so lucky to have you! <3

Start up those jet engines, and let's get out of here! Brazil, here we come! Congratulations to my final six; my black jacket recipients! These next tasks pre-finale are going to be very inspired by our international destination. I cannot wait to see what you all come up with.
We are also saying goodbye to Harry (.Uhu) who once again graced my panel twice with his informative and well written critiques! Thanks again, pal.
It's time to get the hell out of [whichever country you're reading this from] and set sail to Brazil!
