TASK #4

Who Can?

CanCon Can!

It's Week 4... Time for Music Videos!

Leak3.png

Leak1.png
Leak4.png

Let’s talk about something super interesting: Canadian Laws!
In Canada, we have a law called CanCon. In simple terms, CanCon says that 50% of our television programming and 35% of our music on the radio needs to be either made in Canada, or performed by a Canadian artist(s). Thanks to this weird law, we have musical acts that are huge in Canada, but are completely unknown everywhere else. Sometimes they get lucky and break out internationally, but for every Sum 41, The Weeknd, or Carly Rae Jepsen, there are about 200 Victoria Duffields. (Who? Exactly.)

This is our theme for the 6th consecutive installment of the ‘Week 4 Music Video task.’ I have selected four distinct music videos. These four artists are, more or less, only famous in Canada. Your task is to watch these four videos and select one to design an outfit inspired by it. Your outfit can be inspired by the fashion in the video, the tone, the furniture or set design, any type of fabric or colour pattern you see, a particular shot or frame, a motif or material, basically anything you see in the video so long as I can see a visual correlation between your outfit and its chosen video. There is no maximum number allowed per video, you can choose whichever video you like and may switch at any time before submitting.

This task is simple, but very important. I find that those who excel in the music video task tend to make it to the end of the competition. Not always, but usually. For this week, I encourage you to pick whichever video "speaks" to your creative spirit the loudest. Don't worry about being different, don't wonder what the others are doing, just focus on your own artistic vision.

For The 6th Season in a Row...

Let The Week 4 Music Video Task Commence!

Welcome to the sixth Music Video task panel.
I hope you all had as much fun partaking in this week as the previous seasons' contestants did.

This week saw some really remarkable outfits, and as predicted, some not-so-hot ones.

Eliminating somebody this week was very difficult, as there were a small handful of you who could have found themselves on the chopping block for various reasons. While you are all obviously having fun, there seems to be a clear distinction between those who are trying their asses off, and those who are sorta goofing it. Hey, nothing wrong with that, play an LT however you see fit. However, I am always more inclined to save risk-takers when they're in the bottom with somebody who is giving me something I've seen many times before. Originality is the most important virtue in these games.

Our special guest judge for this week is Season 7's champion,
Zechariah (HerbyMainsted)! Not only is Zech a Snawlterm champion, but he's also an accomplished short-term host (when he does host) who has been in the game longer than most.

All of the customaries that I look for in great outfits are present on this piece: motion, monochrome, inventive graphics, using hair inventively, etc. But despite all of these glistening indicators of success, I am left feeling a bit bored by your final result. The individual, isolated red lines just aren't that interesting of an effect to me and I would have preferred to see more of a messy, twisted cluster of cables similar to those in your chosen image. Speaking of your image, I noticed that the black & grey gradient on the back wall wasn't really explored on your outfit either, save for the hair fringe. It's a neat outfit, but given your source of inspiration, I think it could have been a lot cooler and more daring.

This to me is the most Fashion forward, and ready to wear outfit. it's absolutely stunning in my eyes, absolutely delicious and i keep coming back to it. The pose accentuating the patterns, Chefs Kiss. You nailed the scene you were taking inspiration from. Solid effort this week!

marq (aivn)

While you are not reinventing anything or achieving a never-before-seen graphic, I can't help but feel you understood this task perfectly. Not only is this outfit coloured flawlessly to your video, but everything from the fabrics down to the styling is expertly conveyed. You look like you could step through the screen and appear alongside the subjects in the video, and mog them all in the process. I love the black + white details under the jacket, and the jacket itself benefits greatly from the kimono belt. The festivities of colour around the collar and armpits are just the right amount to be noticeable without spoiling the viewer. The ombre pants are fantastic. I don't love the two-toned shoes, that's probably my only issue. Regardless, I am thoroughly enjoying this upscaled streetwear runway outfit. Nice job this week.

This outfit is really clean, neat and put together, but it's very basic and very safe compared to the rest of the submissions. There's not a lot I can say about it because it is a solid outfit, if i have any advice it's to try and take bigger risks. goodluck!

nicole (nicrobbo95)

Week4Nicole.png

You took on a very daring silhouette with this outfit. Inspiring your whole outfit from the chaise and its illuminated opulence was definitely a weird approach to this task, but it's begotten your strongest outfit yet. This is the first time in this competition where I feel your presence. Using the black swimming cap to segregate the hair and make them look like dramatic shoulder pads was genius, and I especially love the consistency between them and the flared long blouse. You look like a glamorous, bedazzled squid. Now that you have shown that you are creative enough to survive here, I need you to maintain this level of risk-taking. Going forward, passable submissions won't be enough to save you any more.

This is absolutely GORGEOUS! Everything about this look is pure perfection. it's almost like a suit and dress hybrid. and those giant white sleeves against the splotchy sleek dress, I'm in love.
One thing I'm really digging is the swim cap to continue the black up top, and then pop of color in the shoe. You're hands down my favorite this week.

"Saint Veronika" by Billy Talent

starring..... Arber, Kyle, & Peyton

Arber (icearbr)

This outfit's colour palette is phenomenal. Your use of that hazy purple smokelike stuff against the translucent chiffon fabric gown is nothing short of astonishing. The orange decal, the blocky boots, that ringed retro belt, it is assembled and accessorized perfectly. There is enough variance in colour to where I'm not bored, but nothing looks too "out of left field" to disconnect me from the immersion of the video. I was a bit disappointed by your choice of the giant zipper at first, only because Habbo has a big button accessory for your chest that I feel would have conveyed a stuffed doll better... but, your refusal to adhere to the obvious is actually what makes all of this so great. The camp that the zipper brings is perfect! My only dislike of this presentation is the haze particles above your model, but I am choosing to ignore them like I did last week with Sparkle's balloon string. You really brought it.

herby

At first i didn't really care for this outfit if I'm being 100% honest, but as more outfits came i keep being brought back. The color palette encapsulates the video perfectly, and the long dress with the flowing down fabric is such a smart and unexpected move.

Kyle (kskins)

BGKyle.png

I picked Saint Veronika because I was hoping someone would design something from the poor innocent subject being unwound. Thankfully, you did justice to the concept because this outfit is bodacious! The oversized coat and the stringy scarf work perfectly as these sort of loose, free-flowing strands of fabric and stuffing. My favourite part of this presentation is actually what you did to the model's face. This is an outfit that could pass for Project Runway or Cozzie Change, and bring the house down in either game. My only offer of feedback is that I wish some of the white was tinted to maybe a smoke-stained yellow or stale pastel brown, just to be more in line with the video. Besides that small nitpick, this is your strongest performance yet.

Snawl

herby

Now I'm a sucker for a giant over the top outfit. I like that you went for the puppet getting unwound, i see all of the intricate details and on the one side of the coin it's a very well made outfit, but on the upper half i think you need to edit it down, because it borders into costume territory.

peyton (peyton125)

Snawl

To put it bluntly, this outfit isn't quite what I was looking for from you this week. There is so much crazy detail in this video you could have taken inspiration from. Even if you weren't inspired by the puppets or the scenery, and just wanted to design something green & grimy, you could have at least provided me a screenshot of where you were taking your inspiration from. I'm left to assume this is just an "everything" outfit, inspired by everything & nothing. The source material is very shallow, and that is almost always a recipe for disaster. As for the outfit itself, it's nice but I can't shake the feeling I've seen all these tricks before. That pose, those sleeves, that vest, that belt. This looks like an amalgamation of all your Lidlterm 5 outfits, but painted green. I feel like you fell back on safe techniques to guarantee your safety till the next week, but unfortunately it was this task more than ever that I was looking for unique inspiration and a clear, concise vision. Last week you submitted a stupendous outfit that almost won the round. I was really excited for you to embark on a comeback narrative... but now, I'm not so sure.

herby

Link from Zelda has become a modernized Twink. Okay Jokes aside. I'm not really feeling this look. The lower half is detailed and put together well but it feels like the top half was an after thought.

"Second Go" by LIGHTS

starring..... Becca, & Alan

Snawl

After two bottom two performances in a row, needless to say you are on borrowed time. This week, you really impressed me. The idea of being inspired specifically by LIGHTS' hair at the end of the video to get away with using a darker canvas is really inventive. The head accessories are very cohesive and well wound together; this is exactly what I was wanting from you last week. I love the torso and how the longer rainbow looks like a dramatic smear effect, like you just finished wallowing around on the ground in paint. The white on the pants is great too. I don't love the creme on the shoes, I feel keeping them white would have looked nicer and more in tune with the video. But regardless of that one flaw, you did a great job punching back and buying yourself another week in this competition. Let this be a lesson that courageous designing will always pay more than playing it safe.

herby

Okay i'm not gonna sugarcoat how i'm feeling about this outfit. I appreciate the risks you tried taking, but this is very harsh on the eyes, and not something i'm loving. You took one of the easier music videos, I think you should've went on a more toned down route.

Alan (alanio)

BGAlan.png

When someone says the name Alanio, I think of inventive gowns with dramatic colours and super creative graphic patterns. I think of a genius who reinvents basic items into never-before-seen textures. So when you submitted this to me, I was left really confused and underwhelmed. This outfit doesn't look like your creative juices were flowing much, and I think that's because you let the community pick your video, rather than following your artistic voice. I enjoy the parallel and perpendicular lines of colour on your chest's rectangle that seems to be the only zone that permits any colour at all. The rest of the outfit is just white and boring. Sewing that jacket into that oversized top is something we've seen many times in short-terms. Hiding the lower garment entirely behind the top was a missed opportunity. The shoes are unnoticeable. I do like the head accessories because the antlers look like dramatic panda furled eyebrows, but that's only one interesting quirk on an otherwise very boring outfit.

Snawl

herby

Out of the outfits for the music video you chose, in my eyes you did create a better version of what I expected. If I had to give you any notes. I don't understand the headpiece, and i think the color is placed well, but the overall shape of the outfit we've seen it before, try to revamp.

"Human" by Skye Sweetnam

starring..... Sarah, Rae, & Mickey

Snawl

I love this sort of salvaged, dirty, fashion-forward approach to the grunts in the video. While your colour palette is super obvious, I must say you feathered it out flawlessly. There isn't a single hue or shade that feels improperly paired or misplaced. The head + neck accessories are simple but to die for. I love the stacked fabrics concealing your face, just like the subjects in the video. There is an industrial charm to what looks like the suspenders riding up your ass and interrupting the flow of the red blouse. It's impractical and trashy, just like the video. The movement of your legs and feet are great ways to create interesting shapes and new composition out of items that otherwise would have looked rather plain. I don't think I have any negative feedback. Your inspiration was super simple and surface level, sure, but the end result is very technical and tells me you know what you're doing.

herby

Your submission is a solid one. I think it gives the fashion and battlefield type of vibe that the music video. The middle section of the outfit is very beautiful, and I see an almost type of Gradient effect with the entire outfit with the darker colors at the lower half and rising up with the bright. Great work.

rae (saffrons)

BGRae.png
Week4Rae.png

I'm a bit confused by this one. I love the lower half of your outfit. Those Roman slippers mid-step look astonishing, like strips of leather bound to your feet in an unorganized fashion. The tips of your puffy skirt peeking out from the eggshell is nice. But then we get to the eggshell itself, whose inclusion in this outfit seems to me more like a hindrance rather than an attribute. I assume you were trying to match the silhouette of Skye Sweetnam's second outfit with the pink dress during the dance break? If so then I applaud the temerity, but I just wish you didn't convey it with such an all-encompassing item, especially an item that we've seen several times in long-terms and shorts, and whose magic has been pretty much explored thoroughly by several designers. The head accessories are nice. You had the recipe for something incredible, but one item choice shot you down this week, unfortunately.

Snawl

herby

This outfit shouldn't work, but it absolutely does. You made that god awful Egg shell look chic and fashionable. Just like the other person who chose the music video. You did such a good job with conveying the vibe into your creation. Keep up the good work!

Mickey (player)

Summarizing the entire video in an outfit is never something I recommend, but I can't lie, this looks incredible. Your jacket's textures are amazing, I love the tattered symmetry and how the rips flare outward while they make room for the more organized dark blue underneath. The reds being pushed to one zone gives the impression that this outfit was salvaged from some sort of industrial attire, like you're wearing reflectors atop the jacket and hood. This outfit has a simple layout but I love your choices of items and how you married them through colours and smart shape composition. The elephant in the room regarding your submission this week, is that it was submitted over 4 hours late. I believe you when you say it was an honest mistake, but also, the temptation to make an example of you is very strong. If I let you skate, will it paint a bad example to the others...?

herby

This is downright ridiculous. The jacket with the bleeding red into that green is amazing and the bottom of the jacket blending in to the skirt and having it flare out. it's a top tier look. You did submit late, and I don't know how brads gonna place you, but I hope you get to continue on.

Congratulations to those of you who managed to impress me on this integral week. For those who didn't, don't sweat it too much. It's not over till it's over. As for our weekly Top 3, I am going with Arber (icearbr), Kyle (KSkins), & Nicole (nicrobbo95). Extremely well done, you three. The winner of this week, for me, has to be Arber (icearbr).

Week 4
Top 3

The Bottom

In no special order, the three who impressed me the least, are. . . . .

Peyton

Besides the fierce makeup, this outfit is pretty generic and lacks an original inspiration. You didn't use your video to show me anything interesting.

Alan

The layout for this outfit is shockingly simple, which is not something I'm used to saying about you. I wish you didn't let icearbr pick your video for you.

Mickey

This outfit is Top 3 worthy,
I enjoy it a lot. However, you were late this week! I hope it doesn't become a regular occurence.

The Designer I Am Eliminating Is...

[Highlight the text to reveal]

Peyton (Peyton125). I am very sorry, I feel like I'm gonna cry as I type this. After your amazing outfit last week, I was really looking forward to seeing you go crazy again with some original item sewing or ground-breaking texture matching. Instead I found your outfit this week - much like your inspiration - oddly restrained and safe. I wanted so much more from you than simply "a green outfit." I hope this elimination doesn't hurt too much, I know you're a very passionate artist. I hope to see you in short-terms and Minis (and potential future LTs should this community stay alive) because you really are such an exciting and fresh designer. This just wasn't your week.

Congratulations to those of you who made the Final 10. Going forward, I am going to be putting major emphasis on originality, and I will be awarding less clemency to designers who give me things I've seen before. This doesn't mean every outfit needs to be whacky Avant Garde, I am just expecting new, original approaches to how you convey your ideas.

Your fourth task is uploaded, good luck.
