TASK 2 - What a Pile of Junk!

Week Two

Example Photo

Congratulations to the 14 of you reading this who've survived your first task, as well as your first spontaneous double elimination! Beware, more will happen if outfit quality drags.
For your second task, you are to design an outfit inspired by a theme of cinema and aesthetic called Grindhouse! I first learned of Grindhouse after watching Quentin Tarantino's Death Proof (highly recommend btw). In simple terms, Grindhouse is a word referring to poor theatre houses of the '70s & '80s in California which played a lot of grimy, low budget B-list movies, typically action and/or thriller. Typical reoccuring fashion elements include torn clothes, "grease monkey" associated garb such as denim, leather, chains, or anything that conveys an industrial aesthetic. But of course, this is Project Runway, so your outfit needs to be creative and fashion-forward, not a costume.
The due date for this task is Friday, the 15th.
I totally understand that this is a peculiar and vague task so please reach out to me for help regarding questions or concerns. Good luck!

Task

*Please note: I tend to design these example photos in less than five minutes. They are NOT a reflection of the quality of outfits I expect from you. Please try to beat my example photos every week, otherwise you will have a difficult time at panel.

Panel

Hello & welcome to your second panel. It was immediately brought to my attention by almost everybody that this task was extremely difficult. In retrospect, I agree and I probably shouldn'tve chosen such a hard task for Week 2. That being said, most of you rallied through and delivered great outfits. Well done.
In light of the Discord drama at the beginning of this week, I want to remind everybody why I began hosting these games: I started Snawlterm in 2012 because I wanted to take the PR hosting experience and make it more enjoyable for everyone involved. The biggest aspect that makes the game enjoyable is selecting an appropriate cast, and offering fair opportunities to newer designers, as well as older gen designers who've been snuffed out of the picture by modern PRs. That is what is important to me, not simply outfit quality. I won't drop names, but I received plenty of impressive applications from exquisite designers who I could have cast if I simply wanted a game full of great outfits. I did cast a few of them, but for the most part, I accommodated people who I feel were most deserving of the spots, and who I feel would be less likely to take the spots for granted. I am proud of the cast I chose for Season 7.
Certain people don't understand this opinion, and immediately label anyone "trash" if they submit one subpar outfit in one game. This is an incredibly unproductive and unfair outlook for anyone to have (but especially a "judge"). I believe in second chances, and I've seen them allow amateur designers to blossom into some of the most innovative designers Habbo has ever seen. The idea that one bad outfit makes someone a bad designer is just another example of RPDR immaturity/RPDR toxicity bleeding into the PR sphere. That, accompanied with whiny entitlement by someone who believes my Season 7 cast should've just been a re-cast of everyone from Season 6, and you've got an exemplar of why not every PR player can be a PR host. I don't give a shit about "a Habbo e-reputation", which is why Snawlterms will always prioritize enthusiastic, passionate designers over entitled divas, and no amount of screenshots shared on an Anti-Snawl discord chat will ever change that. :)

SNAWL: This is simply painful for me to judge. Your outfit itself is absolutely fantastic, but I feel it misses the mark of the task drastically. You designed a gorgeous, innovative, captivating couture gown with expertly crafted avant garde facial pieces and a bouncy, flourishing bottom. If this was a couture task I’d be really happy with this, but it’s not, so I’m not. When I say “Make sure it’s runway-ready!”, I’m not asking for avant garde, I’m reminding you to keep it out of the realm of regular pedestrian wear. You are a resourceful designer who has proven themselves more than capable, and it would absolutely gut me if I’m forced to eliminate you as early as Week 2 because you submitted something off base from the task. If you survive this week, please be more cautious.

RiverStonePeach: This is very visually appealing the ombré blue tones in the rain is an amazing choice. I love the black shoulders and draping. For once I agree with the headpiece choice here, reminds me of a famous painting.. good work!

SNAWL: Two motion shots in a row, eh? I like the outfit as a whole, but it doesn’t sing to me as inspired by the Grindhouse theme. Your colours are quite nice, and the jacket is really grimy and fitting. But you begin to lose me on the long dress, and purse. I’ve always appreciated you being a day 1 submitter, but if it’s at the cost of your creativity, I’d rather you hold off a day or two to really ensure you’re submitting an outfit that best represents your designing abilities, because to me this outfit looks rushed, and I don’t think I’ve ever felt that way about your outfits before.

RiverStonePeach: I love this shot definitely one of my favorites of the group. The movement of the skirt and the matching shoes with the sleekness of the jacket is amazing. I can’t find anything to complain about, well done.

Week2Auby.png

SNAWL: I don’t think anyone missed the task more than you. You were on the right track with the denim, but then you paired it with a leathery metallic dress? I cannot comprehend your thought process behind this, or why one would think that was a good idea. Another major issue I have with this outfit is that the silhouette (shape) is extremely unoriginal and evokes nothing. The rounding of the shoulders with a jacket, and a square dress, it is all so 2015. This task was left wide open for interpretation, and you submit something that could pass for literally any task with just a simple change of the colour palette. I cannot say anything positive, except maybe that I like your shoe choice. This was a major let-down after your original, tantalizing submission last week.

RiverStonePeach: The look as whole is thought out and the color palette is on theme but I think it is missing something to elevate it to the next level, or the jacket is throwing me off against the wetness of the dress. Probably my favorite aspect of the look is actually the textures you used to create the “wetness”.

Week2Jared.png

SNAWL: This outfit is brilliant. You’re using items I normally hate (mainly that fur jacket) and marrying them with a solid brown, and bedazzling them with the scout’s sash to create your own frontal décor. I can close my eyes and genuinely picture this outfit in a Grindhouse movie. The pop of colour *shudders* with the yellow is very necessary, and is needed to elevate this outfit out of the realm of costumes and onto the runway. This outfit is a great technical achievement, and while the silhouette isn’t remarkable, I’m willing to look past it because you’ve nailed every other facet. Great work, Jared.

RiverStonePeach: I see the vision, but the execution for me is a little off. The black pump paired with the neon yellow mini skirt, covered by the furry brown vest and sweater sleeves isn’t flattering for the shoot. Again I see where the look was heading and maybe a different neckwear and skirt choice would’ve made it flow more cohesively.

Week2Avery.png

SNAWL: Upon submitting, you were one of my favourites. But as more outfits poured in, yours quickly got lost in the shuffle and became forgettable. This is mainly due to the cliché-ness of the silhouette – rounded shoulder jacket with that scarf has been done to death in PR. However your colour palette is beautiful, and I thoroughly enjoy the messy black lines on the scarf, belt, and skirt trim. The decision to leave your legs bare was also smart, and for once I actually love the earrings. This is a really good outfit Avery, but I challenge you to get more adventurous with your silhouettes, because this layout is far too generic to warrant a spot in the top 3. Also your shoes look like you walked through dog shit.

RiverStonePeach: First thing I notice is the detailing and shading of the bottom half of this outfit paired with the boot heel is definitely my favorite part of the look. I don’t hate the jacket against but I would like to see what would have been without it and the scarf covering the top.

Week2Zach.png

Zach

Junk Yard

SNAWL: While this outfit serves the task adequately, I can’t help but think you could have done a whole lot more with this. Firstly, did you seriously need to use the cat face chest piece twice in a row? I also don’t find it necessary to colour your heels the same colour as your jacket. Every mildly interesting texture on this outfit is being achieved by a method/effect that has been around for a long time. You’ve been inactive on the Habbo PR scene for a while so I suppose I can’t grill you too hard for not knowing what is & isn’t overused. In terms of technical ability, you’ve composed the colours in a beautiful manner. I haven’t lost faith in you yet, but you seriously need to step your game up if you want a long future in this competition.

RiverStonePeach: Is this mind blowing and different? No. I am not mad at it but I’m not excited or going to remember this

Week2Samantha.png

SNAWL: You have some interesting details, mainly the homemade devil face decal which I love. You also succeed in making an outfit that easily fits the Grindhouse universe. My issues with your outfit come down to the technical decisions. For instance, did you need to show this much skin? I’m not prudish, but the less clothes you wear, the more concentrated my critiques are going to be. The gold + black patterns seem quite predictable, and I really dislike the diva heels from a head-on pose because it makes them look soft and made of jelly. The only note worthy aspect of this outfit is the devil face decal, really. You’re clearly a creative designer, but you’re also limiting yourself by committing to heavily on an idea. My critique for you is the same for Kaytie: please loosen up when conceiving concepts. Don’t commit fully to something just because you enjoy one aspect.

RiverStonePeach: I always will love a bikini. The color palette is strong, I see the vision once again. I am missing a little something somewhere I don’t know if it is the chest decal or the jacket it’s got a lot of great aspects just missing a little oomft.

Week2Taylor.png

SNAWL: Upon submitting you said, “Fashion is about taking risks!” A proverb I wholeheartedly agree with, but you easily have the safest, least thought-provoking outfit of the week. I really liked the idea behind the outfit you shared with me on set, but I think it could have been conveyed in a far more creative manner. I’m looking at this outfit, and there is simply no way this is the best you could have done. I know you too well to believe that. This outfit is only two things – a jacket and pants. And the last-minute decision to increase the amount of pink to the pants was not a good one. While I do see the theme of the task, I see a near absence of aesthetic.

RiverStonePeach: I love pink, I think black was an easy choice with it and the cut outs are very pretty. The jacket is on task suits the look.

Week2Kaytie.png

SNAWL: This outfit succeeds in the prospect of Grindhouse, so congratulations for that. You have some interesting colour patterns that compel me to :zoom 3 and admire them further. However, the overuse of dense black halts the outfit from being more impactful. There is a lot of untapped potential here. But I do like how you played with layers around the waist. Mixing norm gray into the black was also a smart decision. I think this outfit could have been a lot better though, and I challenge you to loosen yourself up and not commit too heavily to a concept; if a concept is not harmonizing with the task, don’t be scared of scrapping it and restarting. This is a middle outfit for me this week.

RiverStonePeach: I really like this design, the color choices and layering over the clean shoulder & paired with the tattered background is a vision. Well done and love this hair.. slight_smile

Week2Filip.png

Filip

SNAWL: Woah, this is gorgeous. I am getting an early ‘90s River Phoenix vibe from this outfit. The choice to use the bloody shoes is so unusual and I’m not sure how I feel towards it, but I appreciate the unorthodox risk nonetheless. Everything else about this outfit is flawless. The checkered pants and the gray unmalleable backpack straps are such an ingenious combination that literally nobody else would have come across. I’ve grown sick of that scarf, but I can stomach it here because it isn’t being used to substitute out texture or fabric integrity. This outfit is both simple and complex, and I could not have asked for anything better. Excellent work, Filip.

RiverStonePeach: I really really live for this look. The top is so unique and perfect for the task and the shoes / pants combo is so suiting.

Week2Jenna.png

SNAWL: You’ve achieved some pretty note-worthy effects, and you have probably my favourite colour palette of the week. This outfit has great technical merit with the solid black pants & shoes which allows the upper bodice to be the focal point. I totally get where you were going with the gold chains, although I find them to be a tad bit overwhelming. Your incorporation of the dino top to add the spike effect along your back is really interesting, and I can’t think of a task it would have worked better on. The norm hat is a bit too much, however. But after all that is said, you’ve wow’d me two weeks in a row. You continue to impress me, and you’ve proven that as a host, sometimes one has to take chances and cast an older gen PR player. Great work.

RiverStonePeach: I love the bottom of the look and the hat paired with the gold necklace. The white makes it a little less powerful but overall an okay design.

Week2Amina.png
Junk Yard

SNAWL: This is beautifully crafted, and the Grindhouse aesthetic is really on-the-nose in a way that isn’t showy or obnoxious. Despite being really intricate in texture, I find the entire package to be quite tame, and to achieve that even balance between the two is an impressive feat. You’re using gender-bending to its fullest potential instead of a stupid gimmick, which is always impressive. You have dolloped grays, whites, and a muted olive green in clever areas to tone down the outfit and prevent it from being too black-heavy. My only minor complaint is in regards to the jacket; I find the rounded shoulder silhouette to be at odd ends with everything else. But besides that nit-pick, you really nailed this task. Nicely done.

RiverStonePeach: The slick effect is amazing. I appreciate the fluidity from the top to the bottom.

SNAWL: This outfit is stupendous! A little too much black on the top half, but that’s my only critique, everything else is breath-taking! The idea to exploit the exposed skin in the thumbs up animation through the overcoat was so smart, and it fits this task perfectly. I find that gown to be criminally underappreciated and you have designed what could be my all-time favourite usage of it. The colours you chose are cohesive to the task, and really accentuate the many layers and textures of the dress. Everything down to your shoe choice was tailor-made for this task and I couldn’t be happier with this. THIS is the Peter I wanted to see in Season 6, but hey, better late than never. Phenomenal work!

RiverStonePeach: I loveeeeeeeeee this top and the skirts flow pairs amazingly. The makeup, the accessories are a great asset to the look. I would swear against this pose but it works great here.

Week2Maura.png

maura

Junk Yard

SNAWL: I look at this outfit and I am immediately taken aback with how harshly the fabrics are clashing. You have your top which is cocooned in a jacket & scarf, but your bottom half is short shorts… I don’t get it. There’s a humungous difference between an artsy contrast, and a poorly constructed outfit, and I’m afraid this falls into the latter. Your colour palette is okay except for the gold scarf; I really wish you omitted that accessory entirely. The walkie-talkie belt was a good idea that I think could’ve been made to be intriguing in the presence of a more thought-out outfit, but on here it looks extremely out of place. I understand you’re working with a very limited wardrobe, but that has never stopped me from loving your norm designs in my shortterms. I think you’re simply out of your depths in this environment. I’m sorry, Maura.

RiverStonePeach: A little boring and basic for my personal taste. Looks a tad dated and sticks out among the group.

Conclusion

Congratulations to everyone on powering through one of the toughest tasks in Snawlterm history. My apologies for subjecting you to it so early on, but I'm glad I did because some of these results were remarkable. Special congratulations to Peter, who is walking away with the win. Filip & Jared, the two of you performed excellent and are well-deserving of your top 3 placements. And as for our departure, we are saying goodbye to Maura, a designer who brings fire to my shortterms, but is a little too out-of-date to continue in Season 7. You will be missed!
Apologies for the delay during this panel. I had a myriad of inconveniences pop up in my life that effectively stymied my creative process, but now I'm back on track! Your third task has already been uploaded. Have fun & get designing!
