TASK 1 - POP Goes the Weasel

Week One

Example Photo

Week1Example.png
Hello & welcome, lucky 16! Congratulations on being chosen to partake in Season 7. Before I explain your first task, I would like to preface that in Snawlterm, double eliminations are unplanned and will happen without warning, depending on the quality of outfits in a given week. For your own safety, treat every task as a potential double elimination.
For your first task, we will take a stab at a phrase I've really grown to hate. Lately I've seen a massive influx of inexperienced PR hosts using the word "pop" to describe anything that remotely has colour. "Wow this outfit sure POPS! I love the POP of colour! Pop pop pop!" I've seriously began to resent the word entirely, and I avoid using it in my critiques all the time... until now.
Your task is to design an outfit that actually does feature a 'pop of colour'. You will achieve this by designing an outfit with a muted and/or dark palette, and add a vivid pop of colour somewhere. You can use as many colours as you want, but keep in mind that more isn't always better. I also recommend that you keep the pop of colour relegated to the same part of the outfit; it is not a good idea to have it appearing in multiple areas.
This is a fairly straight-forward task, but of course I am open for questions/clarifications. The due date for this task is Thursday, May 7th. However, if everyone finishes early, I will upload the panel early. Contact me on Habbo when you are ready to submit your outfit. You can also reach out to me on Twitter (@HabboSnawl) or Discord (ask me for my acc #). Good luck, designers!

Task

*Please note: I tend to design these example photos in less than five minutes. They are NOT a reflection of the quality of outfits I expect from you. Please try to beat my example photos every week, otherwise you will have a difficult time at panel.

Panel

Welcome to your first panel of Season 7. The quality of outfits for this first task was quite underwhelming. Some of you did terrific, but as a group, this was a let-down. Unlike previous Snawlterm seasons, I am not going to grill you guys for underperforming. You each have a 1/16 chance at winning 300 coins, so if you choose to treat that casually by handing in mediocre outfits, that's fine by me.
I thoroughly enjoy critiquing bad outfits.
This week is a double elimination, due to the poor quality of outfits.
You were all warned in the task's dossier.
For the 14 of you who survived, you can go to the newly added Progress page to see your placement. Keep in mind that I rarely ever take history into account when deciding who is eliminated. Lastly, I created a Discord strictly for this season's contestants and judges. My discord is Snawl#5190. Shoot me a message if you would like to be added. It is not mandatory, but it makes contacting me for a photoshoot much easier, as well as promoting a friendly competitive atmosphere.
Eliminated contestants will not be removed from the chat, unless requested.

SNAWL: l'm extremely unimpressed by this. I'm quite baffled at how your top half only has two clothing items, yet it still manages to be a jumble of messy textures that don't go together. Your bottom half is fine -- boring -- but fine. But with the gross colour palette in tandem with textures that are not only generic but also imbalanced and clashing is unforgivable. This outfit reeks of inexperience, lacks any sort of seasoned craftsmanship, and I cannot conceive a positive thing to say about it, despite trying. I'm Sorry Grace.

Corlay.webp

CORLAY: The construction of this design shows little attention to detail or theme. The “pop of colour” is overworked into this design with the abhorrent straps and a combination of fabrics that we’ve all seen paired together numerous times. I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt, you are paired against some of the best and you may catch yourself before you fall. Hopefully you don’t fall soon. Thanks.

SNAWL: l really appreciate you using a sideways pose to rework fabrics that would otherwise be boring. I enjoy the thickness of the pants with the scarf. You kept your pop of colour almost microscopic, and I love that because it leaves the viewer yearning for more. Your shoes however are hideous. Not only do the norm heels look like gummy worms in the walking animation, but your choice of colour is really unflattering and robs attention from the bodice. Also the pop effect itself is nothing new, it's been done many times since the release of that top. You did amazing with your textures, but your concept needs more originality to be considered a top outfit for me. Thank you.

CORLAY: The entirety of this design feels cheap and redundant. We’ve seen this before. The same design, in a variety of colours from a variety of designers. Let’s see some refined craftsmanship this season. The green paired with the lighter green as your “pop of colour” was a tough pill to swallow. Had you worked another colour in there, perhaps this would’ve stood out. You’ll bounce back, it’s a matter of when and will it be too late. Good luck.

SNAWL: While I don't think you're achieving anything remarkable with your silhouette, I think you have one of the most original portrayals for your pop of colour. The task wasn't monochrome so I wish you chose a different colour than lime green, but the editing itself is executed nicely. Leaving the shoes white was a great way to tone the outfit's palette as well. I'm not a fan of the scarf - I feel the fabric is just too inconsistent with everything else. Also your skirt + belt is a combo I'm growing quite sick of due to its commonality in shortterms. This outfit isn't amazing but it is serviceable enough to advance you to the next task. If that was your goal, then good job I guess.

CORLAY: This is a fun take on this task. I do enjoy some of the fabrics you incorporated into this design. They appear glossy. However, sometimes when you over-layer you take a lot away from some of the simplistic aspects the fabrics have to offer. Don’t over-accessorize. Match that vibrant green with a palette that was even more muted and this could’ve really stood out. Good attempt.

SNAWL: This is monumentally better than anything I've ever seen you make, and I actually like how this outfit appears to have some Drag Race-esque elements to it. You're staying true to your style while elevating it to a higher plateau of fashion. I love the black around your neck and shoulders. It's campy and avant garde, and it helps the sunglasses greatly. Your use of norm gray textures around the perimeter of the bodice is excellent. The pop of colour is a great pattern, although I wish you chose a more vivid hue, given your huge amount of black. Besides that, this is a strong outfit. Well done!

CORLAY: I’m more drawn to the tedious layering you’ve achieved in the perimeter of this design than I am the “pop of colour”. Your addition of the black fabrics in the torso of the design really swallow up the blue. Had you used the same darker grey on the black accessories. This may have faired better in your favour. I see redeeming qualities for sure and you have so much potential. It’s going to be fun to see what you do this go-around. Good luck.

SNAWL: I feel like I enjoy this outfit far more than most people, and it's gonna lead to be getting mocked, but whatever this is my longterm. I just love that you gave me a complete outfit instead of basic dress with a generic silhouette like a lot of your fellow competitors did. I'm really not a fan of the shoe choice (or colour), but the rest of the outfit sings to me as almost a gender-bending Vash the Stampede from the Trigun anime series. This outfit doesn't do much for me in the department of innovation, but you've proven to me that you're not here to re-hash old layouts, so thank you. As for the task at hand, a little less red would've served you better.

CORLAY: Had you made the pant grey and the “pop of colour” being the red across the chest. This would’ve been one of the better designs this week. You over-shot the task by doing exactly what Snawl asked you not to do. It’s balanced well but in all the wrong ways. Though it’s a wieldy design I don’t entirely see the relation between this and the task. You’re better than this and I’ll be waiting to see how you overcome this. Thanks.

Week1Jack.png

Wet Paintbrushes

SNAWL: I despise this outfit so much. It's so Earthdrops circa 2012. I know you haven't been active in the fashion community for years, but Project Runways are hosted almost every day, and all of my more recent Snawlterm installments are up for anyone to see. You could have educated yourself on what is "in" today and honed your skills if you really wanted to. I abhor your decision to make the outfit monochrome, and the lime green is just as prevalent as the dark green which nullifies it being a mere pop of colour. You're doing nothing innovative with the textures at all, and why is your hairband lime green too? This looks like it was made by a child. I'm sorry Jack, but this is far too outdated for Season 7.

CORLAY: Abysmal. You ignored the tips and notes Snawl laid down for you this week. I’m not entirely sure you bothered to read the task, if i’m honest. The combination of colours are equally as bad as the choice of fabrics you thought to pair together. I’m trying my hardest to provide you with something constructive this week. I’m just not sure it will matter. Thanks.

Week1Jenna.png

SNAWL: This outfit is simple but superb. Easily the most runway-ready submission this week, I love that you're using two traditionally "ugly" colours and marrying them with innovative fabric placements. The sunglasses add that edge of high-fashion diva that is so often lacking in today's PRs. Every single choice of fabric was brilliantly selected, nothing seems mismatched or unnecessary. I have no nit-picks to offer; it is a smart, deftly executed outfit that doesn't run off onto its own tangent. Excellent work, Jenna!

CORLAY: Compelling. I really think the blue paid off. It’s striking and certainly unique. Your individuality shines through with this crafty design. The muted tones propel the colour of your choice into the forefront. I could’ve done without the glasses. Simplicity often prevails. Lovely job.

Week1Avery.png

SNAWL: You have a great idea on the inner bodice with the lines and straps, but the jacket and head accessories drastically weigh it down. The entire outfit just looks cheap and promiscuous, and that isn't helped by the sultry mauve hues and the diva heels. This looks more like a role-playing outfit than a fashion piece. The pop of colour is one of the least impactful of everyone this week; it's extremely small, and too closely related to the palette of the rest of the outfit. You're a tenacious designer and I hope you can wow me in future tasks. This however, is a disappointment.

CORLAY: Your colour variety holds quite a bit of potential. The idea to showcase a “pop of colour” in a colourful outfit was daring. I appreciate the risk. I think paired with a different top, this could have been more successful. I’m curious to see what you’re able to do in the coming weeks.

Week1Filip.png

Filip

Wet Paintbrushes

SNAWL: I love this, Filip. It's clean and symmetrical, you're playing with interesting shapes not only in the bright colours, but with the black around the waist as well. I love how your bottom half is simple and you didn't use a goofy hat or obnoxious earrings. You knew exactly how much was too much, and you avoided it successfully. The white shoes were a great choice to make sure the outfit didn't become too warm-heavy. I don't have anything else to say, except job well done! Keep up the excellent work.

CORLAY: The overall construction of this design is very tasteful. It’s proportioned well and paired with a gorgeous colour palette. The yellow is striking and positioned well, you can’t miss the theme by looking at this outfit. Great job.

Week1Zach.png

Wet Paintbrushes

SNAWL: I don't get a pop of colour from this outfit. Is it supposed to be the pre-made necklace, or the pre-made gold scheme on the dress, or both? This is my 7th season, I'm simply not going to be impressed by unchangeable accessories on a generic dress. The top + cat face combo is cool, but I've seen it thousands of times. The entire colour palette is murky, unbalanced, and quite frankly boring. I think you have the intuition and creativity to power through this competition and make it to the end, but this outfit is not a step in the right direction. Hopefully you can do better next week.

CORLAY: Disinterested and cloying. You’ve added 3 “pops of colour” which in no way work with the garment you created. This is not how you start a competition of this calibre. If given the chance to progress I really hope you learn from the design choices some of the other competitors made this week and craft your designs to be a little more inspiring. Thanks.

Week1Lee.png

Wet Paintbrushes

SNAWL: I never condone doing a backwards outfit as early as Week 1 because it's a surefire way for a talented designer to be eliminated much earlier than they deserve to be... you however did a fantastic job. You're using a vest that already has a predetermined design, but you're continuing the linear black theme by adding your own perpendicular lines at the top & bottom. You even allude to it with the black trim on your shoes. This is a clean, fresh, visually appealing outfit and I appreciate your will to stick to simplicity instead of ham-fisting more and more funky accessories onto the canvas, like most people do when making a backwards outfit. Great work!

CORLAY: This is one of my favourite attempts this week. The “pop of colour” is prevalent in such an obvious manner (not biased). You’ve shown the judging panel that you’re taking this competition seriously and will work new angles to achieve unique results. I’m impressed by the design decisions this week. Keep it up.

Week1Samantha.png

Wet Paintbrushes

SNAWL: At first glance, I am in love with the dark, dense, rugged, grungy feel this outfit conveys. Your use of running shoes, gray kilt, and a baseball cap are very unconventional for a high-fashion theme, but for me they work brilliantly well together. I can see some people disliking the scarf, but I find it totally necessary to add a flare of femininity. My only issue with this outfit is your pop of colour. While executed nicely, I think a brighter, more eye-capturing colour would have better conveyed the objective of this task and propelled you into the top 3. Nonetheless, this is a great effort. Thank you.

CORLAY: A statement piece. The shapes/textures you fused to create this composition are not lost on me. Very articulate and impactful. The colour climbing up the bodice is both fascinating and creative. Your toned down fashion sense will push you far in this competition if you really work the angle no one else does. Good work.

Maura

Week1Maura.png
Wet Paintbrushes

SNAWL: You have, hands down, the WORST colour palette out of everyone this week. You asked me on set if baby pink/blues were allowed and I strongly recommended that you counteract them with a bright, flashy neon colour. But instead I see a muted green, and a light baby green? A very unwise decision. For the outfit itself, you have an interesting frame on the top half, and I like the use of the linear pants (although I would've paired it with a more matching shoe choice). Your outfit had potential for moderate success, but with a lackluster colour palette that deceives the task's rules, this puts you in dangerous waters for elimination. I'm sorry Maura but I'm not happy with this.

CORLAY: This is uninspiring and dated. You’ve been out of the mix for some time, I think you need to re-dye your roots to be able to keep up in this competition. Hone in on what’s being asked of you each task and make sure to keep your designs original. Thanks.

Week1Amina.png

Amina

Wet Paintbrushes

SNAWL: This outfit is phenomenal, Amina! This is exactly what I envision when I think pop of colour  - but what makes this outfit such a knockout is that the outfit works as a whole, it's not just a mediocre outfit with a beautiful colour splotch. The pitch black apron lining up symmetrically with the gray norm skirt (which in my opinion is one of the most underappreciated clothing items in Habbo PR) is so tantalizing to the eye. The handbag is certainly unorthodox for such an abstract outfit, some would even argue misplaced, but I love it and wouldn't have it any other way. No superfluous head accessories, no needless distractions from the craftsmanship. If you keep designing like this, you'll easily surpass your 4th place finish of Season 5. Excellent work!

CORLAY: You chiseled your colour of choice into your design beautifully. Concise, clean and understated. The smooth textures and clean cut lines balance your take on your “pop of colour”. The decisions you made were effective. Very strong design this week.

Week1Kaytie.png

kaytie

Wet Paintbrushes

SNAWL: This is okay, but it doesn't really elicit any emotion from me, other than "Huh, someone did a silver outfit. That's cool, I suppose." The colour palette is actually one of my favourites of the week. My issue with the outfit is the silhouette, which is overly reliant on the feathered cowl. I love that accessory, but you really need to do something special with it to avoid looking too generic. However I LOVE the bottom half, mainly the ends of the cowl dipping down over the ribbon belt. That's an interesting graphic for sure. Nevertheless you've survived this week and I hope to see some more creative layouts from you in the future. Thanks, Kaytie.

CORLAY: The colour quite literally bleeding through the fabrics is appealing and fits the task quite well. Although I do have a problem with some of the design choices this week. I feel as though i’ve seen designs like this before. Now’s the time to push yourself to try new combinations, new palette variations, new poses. Your potential can be elevated. Don’t limit yourself to what you already know. Let’s see some more.

Week1Auby.png

Auby

Wet Paintbrushes

SNAWL: You have one of the most interesting and intriguing colour patterns of the week with the yellow, but it's been drastically underutilized in this outfit. I understand your decision to use those baggy pants, especially in tandem with the sweater, but I just feel like it's not enough. It's all black and barren, and those heels do not make sense with those pants in my opinion. Your level of creativity with the yellow graphics is apparent, but the overall outfit lacks that spunk. I think this could've had potential to win this task if it were treated with more cohesive hands. A middle-of-the-road performance for me.

CORLAY: Tasteful and intriguing. Everyone knows black and gold work in tandem with one another. That aspect of the design seems safe to me. Your ability to craft abstract patterns into a garment, excites me. Hone in on your craft and refine some of the decision making and you could be a top contender.

Conclusion

In a not so surprising double elimination, we are saying goodbye to two designers. Jack & Grace, the two of you are undeniably talented designers in your own right, but you guys flaked this week, and as a result, have been sent packing.
I wanted more from the both of you, and I am sorry to bring your journeys to an end so early on. But it is what it is. This is a huge cast, and we need to get the ball rolling to be finished before August. Those who do not adapt to newer, more innovative fashion techniques will be left in the dust.
On a positive note, congratulations to Amina for taking the crown for our first week. You're a talented designer who is no stranger to winning tasks (see Season 5), and I eagerly await your future outfits. Congratulations to Filip & Jenna who did well enough to nab the top 3.
Your 2nd task is posted. Good luck!
