Task #8

I See A Rather Nebulous Connection

Calabash Nebula - Snawl

Calabash.png
Nebex (1).png
Abstract Paint

Do you remember what a nebula is from elementary school? They're clouds of matter (dust particles & ionized gases, mainly) that are typically thrown out into space by a dying star. Once the matter becomes dense enough, gravity collapses it inward and they birth a new star!
Your 8th task is to design an outfit inspired by a nebula.
As of writing this, there are around 3,500 discovered & named nebulae to choose from. You can click this link for a list of 150, or you can find one through another source. When you submit your outfit, you must provide me the name of your chosen nebula so I can verify it's real and not some fake AI art bullshit.

Once you choose a nebula, you can inspire your outfit from the whole image or a small section. Whether or not you include the blackness of empty space as part of your outfit is entirely up to you; I'm giving you full creative control this week.
Any colour palette you can think of almost certainly exists in a nebula out there, so get searchin'!

This is the final task before I give out black jackets to our lucky Top 6. With those coveted jackets comes a plane ticket to this season's international destination.
Anybody can match a colour palette of a nebula onto a Habbo outfit. What I am looking for from this task are details in shapes and patterns. Get resourceful, try many things. Don't give me something I've seen before. You don't need to be gaudy or Avant Garde if you don't want to, a simple silhouette can still have incredible texture. Do whatever you need to do to get yourself on that plane!

Your due date for this task is Wednesday, April 3rd at 8:00pm EST (1am GMT.)
Good luck, my final seven!

Panel #8

DumbbellNebula.png

Thank you final 7 for getting your submissions in with ~30 hours remaining, a new season record! I am very pleased with the level of risk-taking you guys have been doing. Season 9 is going to be one for the books because I don't feel anybody is playing it safe; watching the artistic journeys each of you are taking has been incredible.

Because we're at the final 7, that means this panel will be where I give out the coveted Snawlterm black jackets! (All it means is that you've made it to the final six - don't mind me being cheesy.)
At the bottom of this page is this week's ranking, so don't scroll down till you're 100% ready. The six who survive this week will not only receive their black jackets, but also a plane ticket to this season's international destination. Season 9 has been particularly centered around me & my interests and hobbies - so what better place to travel than to my stomping ground? The international destination for Season 9 is . . . . .
Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada!

Snawl: I'm enjoying your decision to go a sort of hooded pantsuit direction instead of the more obvious idea of a voluptuous gown. You've used just the perfect amount of gold in the right places. The teal vest, jagged belt, and Persian shorts work really well and it doesn't require a stretch of the imagination to see them harmonizing on a runway. I'm not a fan of the heels, and that's only because of the shorts. I feel you should have picked one over the other, and the shorts are bringing more to the table. The exposed skin below the knee doesn't look like an edgy creative decision, it looks like a wardrobe malfunction to me. I'm also not too keen on the sparkling tie; I definitely see its relevance but I feel the shape is too sharp and geometric. A larger, draping scarf or neckpiece could have added more drama and also hid more of the teal vest which would make it feel more special and entice the viewer's eye to search for it. Overall, it's a cute outfit that commemorates your nebula very well, but it runs into a few design flaws that I feel could have been avoided with just more careful thinking.

Snawl: You used the same nebula as my example and I'm not bothered by it in the slightest. In fact I am happy you & I took wildly different approaches to it. Sadly however, I don't have a lot of positives to say about this outfit. Everything you've made in this game has looked punctiliously designed at every step, except for this. This looks less like a Zechariah design and more like a lesser talented person trying to parody your style. The cape you chose is extremely over-present and so you're working around a very difficult obstacle that isn't even necessary. I like what you did with the collar's fur and the earrings, but I wish that particular shade of burnt orange didn't overstay its welcome. Using a lighter orange - and maybe even a bright yellow - in some other areas would have added a lot of depth to the outfit, and thusly make the black cape more palatable. The hair just isn't exciting, the undergarments at the bottom are neat but not original, and the decision to face backwards removed a lot of utility from the upper body that you could have used to make this look more interesting.

Snawl: This outfit is a chaotic yet stunning hodgepodge of different regions separated by solid colours, and I feel like each region represents an entirely different cloud of gasses & particles. You picked a very difficult nebula, but you handled its diverse and intimidating gradients in such a smart way. I'm very glad you didn't try doing some sort of ombre smear effect because I am 97% sure it would have been a disaster. Instead you have this heavy, impractical gown that overwhelms your eye with a plethora of regions and crevices that fight for your attention. Heck, all you gotta do is cut the sleeves off, and I can easily see this being worn by someone at the next Met Gala. Its beauty is in its unrestrained fabrics and colours. Would I change anything? Eeehh, perhaps I would swap out the cyberpunk head accessory for something that doesn't interrupt the head-scarf too much. Besides that small issue, I think this outfit is a triumph. Once again you've exceeded my expectations. I don't know what you've started to do differently over these past three weeks, but my God it's working.

Snawl: This outfit has a sort of cleanliness to it that I find absolutely alluring; like a friendly, inviting, unintimidating, clean prospect to it (much like your Week 6) that I feel even non-fans of fashion would appreciate and resonate with. I love the circular backpack and how its smooth texture sits so calmly on the leather jacket's shiny fabric. The kisses of pink peeping through at the sleeves and collar are sort of like reticles that further focus your attention to the middle. The aquamarine on the skirt doesn't seem to be prevalent in your nebula, but I actually like that a lot. It gives extra attention to your outfit but it's related closely enough to the nebula that it doesn't seem like a blunder. The only aspect of this outfit I'm not 100% sold on are your black heels. While I agree that this outfit needed something massive down there, I feel those heels in particular never pair well with that skirt, it's too Avril Lavigne's Goodbye Lullaby era, if that's a fair critique at all. Besides that, I really love this outfit.

Snawl: Pink + green is a colour combo I've learned to really appreciate recently, and so I must try to best to keep my biases at bay. I'll try to talk less about the colours themselves and more about how they're featured. I really enjoy the use of vertical lines on both the shoulders and on the bottom of the skirt. I feel they work to intentionally skew the image from far away, as your chosen nebula is blurry due to its far distance. This backpack seems to be made for this task because the top part is a circle-like shape with faint purple and white which match your nebula's nucleus like the last Tetris block in a perfect game. The way the bottom of the skirt flare out with the top of the shoulders is a very clever callback to the stingray silhouette of the nebula. I also love the blackness in the middle of the earrings and how it obfuscates the head's shape. The only issue I have with this outfit that is worth mentioning are the Indian braids. The jewels clash heavily with the rest of the outfit, and the floral green pattern is nice but doesn't bring anything to the table. This outfit would be way stronger with something more neutral. Besides that, this outfit is pretty great.

Snawl: I gave your outfit a square outline because it was blending in so well with your nebula, hahah. This is probably the weirdest and most difficult nebula chosen this week, but you rocked it. I think because this nebula has no defining shapes or silhouette, it allowed you to get a bit "messy" with the outfit's design. I'm glad you didn't try to duplicate the colourfui brush stroke effect onto the outfit because it likely would've ended up looking like toothpaste. Instead you're giving this really funky, graphical thin gown that looks both complex yet wearable. The blue cape is the perfect wisp to celebrate the nebula without overkilling it - however I have noticed it is the same item (and pose!) from last week. I really love the solid red mask because it adds that small gesture of edge and unconventionality that lifts up the presentation. My only criticism is very minor: the thin red dress plus the bow + headband in your hair sort of evoke a stereotypical Japanese kimono without sleeves. That's probably just my fault because I've been power-watching Shogun so take that with a grain of salt.

Snawl: It's great to see you take risks, but this outfit isn't doing too much for me. The immediate presentation reads "Welcome to my CC! Your first theme is Greek Gods, go!" and I think that is largely in part due to the lack of colour diversity offered by the nebula. The entire top half is very bright, which I understand was necessary for your smoky, whimsical idea. I feel you could've conveyed that really well while also introducing some darker blues (or black?) to the top half - the beard's flowers just aren't enough. Also the hair didn't need to be silver at all. As for the bottom portion of the outfit, I feel the skinny jeans + cape weren't a good idea. The celestial print looks too foreign to the pants, which further strengthens the illusion that I'm looking at a pedestrian outfit adorned with fantastical accessories, rather than a full, complete fantastical outfit. This outfit does have a few details I enjoy, like the cloudy collar of the cape marrying into the winter scarf, and the beard was a neat idea too. Sadly, this has a lot of critical flaws that stymie your artistic vision. Frankly I think you chose a nebula that was just too difficult and incompatible with your style.

Conclusion

Well done to the seven of you for your hard work - not just in this week, but across all eight challenges. You've all fought your asses off to still be here, and for six of you, you're about to embark on a journey to the Pacific Northwest for our international destination.
Time to give out some plane tickets & black jackets...

The winner of this task, and the first person boarding the plane with their new black jacket, congratulations goes to. . . . . .

Hopefully a change of scenery will help get you back on top. Good luck.

Bottom Two

Nicole (nicrobbo95) & Zechariah (HerbyMainsted)... The two of you have each given Season 9 so, so, so much to be thankful for. Unapologetic art, sincere creations, and great attitudes. Both of you deserve to be in the final six, but sadly you both underperformed this week. I'm sorry it has come to this, but one of you isn't boarding the plane.

The LAST black jacket goes to. . . . .
(Highlight text to reveal)

Zechariah (HerbyMainsted), congratulations, you are in the final six and will be advancing to our international destination. Your outfit this week was not quite long-term worthy, but this was your first slip-up in an otherwise tremendous portfolio. I am hoping the new setting will give you that extra boost of assurance you need to make it to the finale, similar to Season 7.

Nicole (nicrobbo95), this means you will be leaving us in 7th place.
First I want to say that I feel so lucky to still have access to contestants like you. You are always eager to play, and I can speak for every LT host who has ever had you when I say you are a fantastic contestant who always relishes in the game. Your creative, highly conceptual designs are never not a blast to judge. Even though you won't be joining us overseas, I am glad you outlasted your previous Snawlterm ranking. Who knows, maybe 3rd time's the charm? ;)
Thank you for all the hard work you've contributed to Season 9.

Congratulations, final six! Don't just stand there staring at me, get on that flight, we're taking off! Your 9th task is posted. Good luck!
