Task #1
I'm a Backpack Loaded Up With Fashion

Congratulations to the fifteen of you who have been selected to partake in Snawlterm Project Runway, Season 9! This is going to be a remarkable season, I cannot wait to see what you guys come up with! If you have any questions about the game, please don't hesitate to ask me. I want you all to be on an even playing ground and have a thorough understanding of the game.
For your first task, you must design an outfit that features the clever use of a backpack! Any backpack available on Habbo.com is allowed - I am prohibiting the use of retro backpacks for this task (but you may use other retro items elsewhere in your outfit this week.) If you are having trouble accessing most backpacks, feel free to use a clothing generator (like this one) to access all options, including purchasables and NFTs.
For this task, your backpack must be at the front of your outfit. This means I will only be accepting backwards poses! You can use the "head rotated around" effect achievable on most generators, but it certainly isn't mandatory.
This task has no set theme or aesthetic; you can design whatever your heart desires. However, I would strongly advise avoiding anything that is too camp, or too costumey. This task is for you to prove to me that your work belongs on the runway. This is Project Runway, not Face/Off on the SyFy channel.

Your due date for this task is Saturday, February 3rd at 8pm EST (1am GMT)
If you have questions I failed to address, bring them to my attention.
Good luck!
Panel #1

Hello & welcome to your first panel of Season 9!
You all submitted on time with more than a day to spare, so I am extending my gratitude with an early panel upload! I don't think I've mentioned this before, but the window for re-submissions ends either at the deadline or at the moment of the last outfit submitted. Outfit advice doesn't have a window, but preferably the sooner the better.

Because this is our first panel, I am judging this round solo. After this week however, I will be sharing the judge's table with familiar faces in the Habbo PR community! All of whom are people whose opinions I trust, and whose skill I would consider expert.
I will leave you with an interesting tidbit from community orator, Arber:

*Outfits are always judged in order of submission

Snawl: Since your return to Habbo, I've been really impressed by your sudden adherence to experimental clothing. This outfit is no exception; it's one of the more daring conceptual designs I've seen in a long time and I hope to see more going forward. This submission is a very clever use of beetle backpack because you're embracing the hard, creepy, disgusting property of the exoskeleton by extending it with other accessories. This outfit is a level of body horror on par with a David Cronenberg film and I don't know whether to praise it or hit it with a rolled up newspaper. The opposing purple patterns are lovely, and the everest green shoes give this outfit a sort of late '90s cartoon colour palette. This is a weird, yet stunning and thought-provoking outfit, a solid start to the competition.
Cass (Cassandra.Goth)
Snawl: Thank God you resubmitted, that cyan outfit was a boat wreck. This outfit has a far more pleasant palette, but sadly, it suffers from the same flaw your other prototypes did: Your backpack isn't at the heart of the outfit, but instead looks like an insignificant space filler. For me, your backpack is easily the least interesting part of this outfit and almost looks like a mistake because you're not using the leaves or woven basket texture to your advantage at all; your make-up, jewelry, and ombre dress are far more interesting. I wish you weren't mentally married to that one backpack all week because I think it stalled your ability to create something actually stunning and intriguing. This outfit is decent, it's certainly not bad, and I enjoy the gold. Is it something I expect from a long-term? Not at all. You're way better than this.

Chan (Chan.)

Snawl: This outfit packs a visual punch because you've made the jetpack backpack the stand-out by contrasting both its colours and materials. We go from murky, grimy metallic pipes to gentle, free-flowing, rich oil paint coloured fabrics. I love the use of the heels because their back angle works so well with the jetpack. Your inclusion of the apron works well too because it alters the shade of the jetpack just enough to where it's unique without looking totally bastardized. This outfit could've been too short & stubby, but you saved it with the headscarves because they add some much needed colour to the top half of the canvas. What would I do different? I probably would've thrown a scarf in the mix just to alter the top edges of the jetpack a bit. Other than that, this is a solid effort, well done Chan.
Skye (Squeeling)
Snawl: I am blown away by the textural density of this outfit. At first glance this looks like you've had the aid of several retros, but I believe this outfit is 100% achievable on .com (correct me if I'm wrong.) You picked a difficult, campy backpack that could have looked tacky in less experienced hands. Instead of trying to integrate it into a concept it didn't fit into, you instead designed around it. The norm skirt & jagged belt combo work brilliantly well with the backpack's convex zipper lines that droop down. There is a very subtle gradient shift between the belt + skirt and I love it. I also love the opera gloves against the top's sleeves. The flaws I have with this outfit are so inconsequential they pose little threat to your score this week, but I would prefer a different heel from behind because these look a bit unnatural. Also the sunglasses clash with the hairstyle for me. Other than that, you nailed this task. Excellent work, Skye.

Peyton (peyton125)

Snawl: Your performance this week frustrated me a bit. There are hints of genius in this outfit; little sprinkles of brilliance that tell me this was made by a very talented artist, but everything comes together too cluttered and confusing in the final product. I feel your chosen backpack works against you, because I find it uninteresting and I am struggling to look past it and gaze at the far more interesting textures on the shirt. Your sleeves & shoulders have wicked patterns, and I like your use of the cyberpunk pants and the champagne coloured heels. Sadly the ladybug (and the dino tail!) look too artificial to blend in properly with the clothing underneath. The head accessories are pretty nice, but much like your top, they work against your backpack. Your eye for detail is flawless, but you need to pick your fabrics a little smarter. A black-&-grey palette only works if you're pushing boundaries with innovative graphics, which you're not sadly.
Nicole (nicrobbo95)
Snawl: You may be stunned by my picking of this outfit, but I picked it because it was clean and consistent, whereas a lot of your alternate options were very busy, and treated the backpack as a bit of an after-thought. This outfit however, is very beautiful. The backpack is the central figure of which everything else emerges from. Its natural lines and stitches are commemorated in every other corner of the outfit. I love your use of the cap, because it makes the final product look really wearable and like something I'd see in a magazine. This outfit doesn't look like some goof put their backpack on backwards, it looks like the backpack's fabric was stripped and repurposed into a hoodie! Leaving the legs bare and embracing the white socks is so fierce and in-touch with North American west coast street culture which at the moment seems to be embracing UK Modernist style from the '60s. A minimal outfit done phenomenally well, excellent work Nicole!

Chris (doglover)

Snawl: There's a technical craftsmanship on display that is really lovely. You blended the jetpack without swallowing it up; I feel that a non-Habbo player could still look at this outfit and immediately identify the jetpack and not have to squint to see it. The strongest part of this outfit are the intricate details underneath the pack around the waist. Your choice of clothing is a great contrast to the backpack as well, I enjoy how outward flaring the fabrics are. Ultimately I think a more daring colour palette would've pushed this already great outfit to a higher echelon. It's beautiful to look at, but it isn't the most memorable of the week. Going forward, I think you'll have more success if you experiment with colours as brilliantly as you do with fabrics. Nice start, Chris.
elysse (lc22)
Snawl: The outfit operates greatly as a high-fashion sort of late-in-his-life McQueen piece; I thoroughly enjoy the bedazzled gold on what looks like a blouson dress. Sadly the presentation begins to lose me with the cap & boots. They look very clunky and exaggerated when compared to everything else which looks dainty. The gold cap oversaturates the gold on the body, and immediately makes me think of Pan from Dragon Ball Z. The rain boots look not only uncomfortable, but at odds with everything else. The foundation this outfit is built on is lovely and had it been refined with more care, I think it could have been a Top 3 contender. I will always respect when a designer develops their own personal style and I would never look to stymie that, but in relation to this game, I would like to see more stylistic accessories going forward.

Snawl: A very visually striking outfit that takes great advantage of the gold splotches on the Anubis backpack, as well as the bilateral outward silhouette of the butterfly wings. Out of all the outfits I received this week with the new celestial top, this is easily the best execution because it harnesses the dripping effect of the tassels. As my eye travels lower, I do find myself enjoying the busy textures, although I don't care for the tail which in turn makes the jackal look like it's taking a rocky blue shit. The gray socks are nice. I also like how you left the head blank so as to avoid a costume appearance. You provided an ornamental, decorative sort of podium for the Anubis to sit atop while still looking like something I'd see stomp down an Avant Garde fashion show. Perhaps a little more colour variance would be great, but the monochrome helps highlight the gold. Overall, a stellar job!
Filip (lidl-wayne)
Snawl: You've been my mental go-to designer for quite some time for high-fashion, highly conceptual gorgeous outfits. This is an entirely new side from you which is always exciting to see. How I feel about it, I'm not entirely sure yet. I think you did a superb job at relating the young, cutesy backpack to the rest of your outfit. You made an almost radial colour gradient at the top with your sleeve, earring, and mask, it's actually quite genius. Unfortunately however, the lower half of this outfit begins to dissipate my excitement. At first I liked the long white undershirt, but now I feel it carries the outfit into the dreaded pedestrian zone. The sneakers & baggy chinos are "urban" enough, and so the undershirt just seems like a missed opportunity wherein you could have played with more exciting geometric shapes. Either way, I'm always here for a designer reinventing themselves, and so I am thankful you're doing it on my stage at least.

Snawl: Since when has pandering to my Canadian nationalism ever worked before? Hah I kid. This is a gorgeous outfit. I am notoriously unforgiving towards white dominant outfits, so the fact that I am not currently ripping my hair out over this outfit is a small victory in and of itself. This presentation features some signature Herbesque trademarks that I've grown to love from you, including a bald head, and a motion pose being used to completely re-invigorate your clothing items. Photographing you was a blast because every frame was awesome. My only "critique" I have for you this week is to not rely too much on items that you've had immense success with in the past. That long Middle Eastern undergarment is an item I've seen you use avidly in both long-terms & short. You rock it better than anyone else, but this is S9 and so I would like to see a bit more boundaries pushed by you. Otherwise, solid effort!
Mickey (player)
Snawl: A truly show-stopping outfit. If someone's idly scrolling this page, they're gonna stop on this. These colours burst off the screen with the vitality of a Van Gogh piece, and they're layered in a simple-to-understand yet intricate fashion. I'm glad you let me advise you to straighten the pose because I feel the pastel green dress just comes alive so much better when it's cutting through the cape so symmetrically. The wisp of bright yellow on the mermaid tail is fantastic. Your chosen backpack is so off-putting yet you somehow made fall in love with it and want to see more. You spotlighted it by contrasting it - such a simple idea yet so few people tried it this week. The black & yellow head accessories are interesting, I don't know if they were totally necessary. Had you nixed them, I feel this outfit would be just as strong. The fact that you can be so original and blow us away with only four items is a testament to the importance of building layers, and having a basic understanding of colour theory. Phenomenal start, Mickey!

Necole (Necole1101:)
.png)

Snawl: Yes Necole, I do find this outfit to be fairly campy. That's not inherently a bad thing, however. Camp can be fun and creative, and there is a fun presentation to this outfit. It looks like something I'd see in this music video, and that allusion is helped by the earrings & scarf eerily resembling the pattern on the Anubis backpack (which, funnily enough, you didn't even use.) I wish you had a bit more fun with the colours and made a more balanced palette - the leaden gray on the braids is nice but I wish you expanded its territory. All of the purple sort of just blends together and makes my eye gloss over it instead of appreciate the articles of clothing. The top & gown are too matchy-matchy if you get what I mean. Conceptually you're a wicked designer bursting with creativity, however you struggle with refining for the runway. Remember, not every accessory slot needs to be filled.
sarah (sparkle)
Snawl: Going retro-heavy on round 1 isn't advised, but goddamn, this outfit is really charming. I love the nude effect you made with that sweater, and I also love the call-back to the strips of material with the head accessory. Because your patterns are so complex, this is a rare occasion where minimal items & minimal colours actually enhances the outfit instead of dulling it. But what's most important is that your backpack is the star; the rest of the outfit looks to be emerging from it almost. Some people may say this outfit needs a "pop of colour" and while that's an understandable critique, I don't think I agree. I think you knew precisely how much was just enough, and danced on that line beautifully. The only part of this outfit I'd change are the shoes, they look very clunky and they don't carry the level of grace the rest of the outfit carries. Besides that, this is a solid submission.

Ashlyn (ramonda)
.png)

Snawl: Coming off your win in FF1, I'm glad to see your flare hasn't dissipated because this outfit is fantastic. I've seen several people try to make that bloody jacket happen, I think this may be the best attempt I've seen. The jacket plus the backpack's straps and the extra white added by the kimono bow all come together as this masterpiece of Modernist industrial wear repurposed for the runway. The dino backpack's cute factor isn't completely erased, and you used the excess red flawlessly with the norm skirt. Even the earrings which may seem unimportant are actually a subtle stroke of genius because they harken back to the dino's oval shaped feet. The only thing I'd change? I'd spin the head back around because the bulkiness of the dino just makes more sense as a backpiece instead of on the front; I'm imagining you trying to walk down a runway and almost tripping as the dino's tail sways between your legs. Regardless, this is a masterful outfit! You were last to submit and the final product was well worth the wait.
Conclusion
What a fantastic Week 1. If that's a sign of things to come, then I am extremely excited to see what you guys cook up in these coming tasks. The casting process was tough, but looking at these results, I've clearly ended up with the right 15 people.
The winner of this task is the person who did so much with so little, Mickey (Player), congratulations! It wasn't even close, all 3 of my guest judges singled your outfit out as their favourite in our group chat. You've raised the bar for everyone. I would also like to congratulate Ashlyn (Ramonda) & Nicole (nicrobbo95) for landing in the Top 3, respectively. The three of you did tremendously well this round.
Bottom Two
Despite the amazing quality of outfits this round, it wasn't sunshine & rainbows across the board. Two of you really, really dropped the ball this week and let me down. Those two people are Cass (Cassandra.Goth) & Peyton (Peyton125). You ladies missed the essence of this task by designing forgettable outfits that didn't harness the magic of your chosen backpacks. You both committed the cardinal sin of blending in the object you were supposed to stand out with. You two are two of my favourite current designers who've wow'd me time & time again in my most recent short-terms. I don't understand why either of you thought playing it safe in a long-term was a good idea.
The person ELIMINATED is . . . . .
(Highlight text to reveal)
Neither of you. You both fucked up on an equal level, so I'm not going to pick favourites by canning one over the other. This was nearly a double elimination, but I am giving you each a second chance to play this long-term like, well, a long-term, and not a short-term. I don't want forgettable outfits. I want passionate, risky, original. No more trying to fly under the radar, it's not working in Season 9.
To those of you who survived, well done. Let this panel's results be a loud & clear lesson: If I wanted to judge short-term quality outfits, I'd host a short-term. I've worked far too hard on the tasks & website to warrant "passable" submissions. Take risks, explore the limits of the medium, and challenge your own ideas of what looks good. I promise you'll truly be surprised by what you can come up with. Thank you.
